Monday I visited Maskine Maskine Amager in Copenhagen & I was blown away by the punk, stubborn recovery power of this place for / by people with SMI. Love against the [psychiatric] machine 🖤

Deleuze & Guattari, AO (p. 118)

Just submitted my abstract for poster presentation at the Euro Conference on Integrated Care and Assertive Outreach in Copenhagen, in June 2025. Booked my train tickets; 10 hours landscape views of NL-DE-DEN, I look forward to that! #DoNotFLy Hopefully by then I will celebrate the end of #PhdLife.
The abstract text.

Title: The pearls and perils of friendship as method in the margins (FaMM) in social psychiatric research

Authors: Alke Wisselink, Gustaaf Bos, Lian van der Krieke and Richard Bruggeman.

Abstract text: ‘Friendship as method’ (Tillmann-Healy, 2003) is a relatively unknown and unusual qualitative, ethnographic research approach, especially in academic psychiatry. Still, we drew on this inter-personal approach in prolonged encounter-based fieldwork, studying a) ‘the good life’ of people with psychosis susceptibility, and b) the associated, often complex, communications and collaborations, in psychiatric and supportive housing contexts in The Netherlands. The researcher purposefully acted less like a ‘regular’ researcher or a professional care worker, and more as a friend, aiming to account for the interlocutors’ isolated and marginalized positions. In line with a methodological paper we have written, we show on this poster the ‘Pearls’ and ‘Perils’ of approaching interlocutors in marginalized positions as a friend. And we present some lessons learned. This poster resonates with relevant ethical questions and concerns in qualitative research and (academic) psychiatry, such as reciprocity, intimacy and boundaries. We conclude that ‘Friendship as Method in the Margins’ (FaMM) requires reflexivity, courage to experiment, boundary-work, and an open, safe space of team supervision.

Today we had a garden party for my birthday (and I also happen to be a woman) 🎂, and in the evening we watched 'The boy who harnassed the wind'. It is important to be aware of the possibility of scarcity (food, school), in our global northern sphere of often suffocating and decadent wealth.

A Dutch word for something (or more commonly someone) that you can’t think of the name of is huppeldepup! There is no word that I enjoy saying aloud more. HUPPELDEPUP! There’s also a pub in The Hague that puns on the word huppeldepup…

Despite knowing that I am currently stable from a psychiatric perspective, I still found myself considering that somehow the visit would spiral out of control and I might get sectioned. That is the tragedy and trauma of coercive psychiatry. It casts a long and frightening shadow over all of us.

This morning we - as a Dutch team - had a nice exchange on participatory research in #psychiatry with the SelfRecovery German/French teams. I presented our 'passible polyphony' (methodological team-reflexivity) paper. I used Shogun to highlight the 'voices' that speak from our own experience.
A scene from Shogun with the English canons demonstrating. Beneath the picture: the quote from the Japanese interpreter 'Tell us about a battle you were actually in yourself'.
