If you are planning to attend #APS2025 next week, please come by our (@winterstat.bsky.social & @ashleylwatts.bsky.social) invited symposium on the myriad problems of widespread statistical model evaluation practices (e.g., goodness-of-fit testing), along with some insightful solutions
“It is impossible to escape the impression that people commonly use false standards of measurement — that they seek power, success and wealth for themselves and admire them in others, and that they underestimate what is of true value in life.”
― Sigmund Freud, Civilization and Its DiscontentsModel Evaluation and Its Discontents
Invited Symposium
Saturday May 24, 2025 10:30 AM - 11:50 AM ET

Subject: Methodology

Wes Bonifay (Chair)
Talks:
How to Lie With Fit Statistics
Wes Bonifay (Presenting Author)
The Shape of Good Model Fit
Sonja Winter (Presenting Author)
Consideration of Indicator Interchangeability Can Strengthen Construct Validation Efforts
Ashley Watts (Presenting Author)
Statistical models enable scientists to describe data, explain phenomena, form testable predictions, and (ideally) understand the world. To achieve such aims, a model and its components must undergo thorough evaluation. In this symposium, we confront the widely accepted methods of model evaluation, expose their limitations, and explore more insightful alternatives.

NOAA is reportedly on the DOGE chopping block. The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US. A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans. Again, this isn't about efficiency.

Here's why your education friends had a real rough one today. It's... it's the entire education data collection apparatus of the United States. www.edweek.org/policy-polit...
Screenshot of the article that reads: The Institute of Education Sciences, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education, appears to be the latest agency in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency office.

Dozens of researchers and contractors received notices Feb. 10, directing them to immediately stop work on research projects and program evaluations financed by IES, a federal agency with a roughly $800 million budget, sources say.

It was not immediately clear which—or how many—of IES’ hundreds of contracts are affected, though one source estimated roughly 170.

Our recent work is motivated by claims like "Using Model A, we replicated earlier findings." Usually, this just means Model A replicated the good fit of the original study. But fit replication ignores important between-study differences in both data patterns & parameter estimates
Figure 1. The confirmatory factor model in Panel A will fit well (comparative fit index (CFI) ≥ .95) to all three correlation matrices, despite considerable differences in the data patterns and parameter estimates. Data matrices are available on OSF (https://osf.io/q6rvf/).
