St Paul. Thomas Paine evangelist. Read more Orwell (especially his journalism). The American Revolution was a revolution of the enlightenment and is worth saving.

personally I think we should just take the ai doomers at their word and shut it down if they’re telling the truth, well, good thing we shut it down. If they’re exaggerating, well, they shouldn’t have done that

Democrats should be at the microphone right now noting that this is a Hatch Act violation that they'll be pursuing in January. I don't care that the nation's become numb to this shit. It's still illegal and if Democrats should run against it and then act to crush it.

Three notes: (1) this is not *just* marketing. These guys really do mean it. They are convinced they’ve built a vengeful digital god. (2) but also they’re a cult. They are not impartial scientific experts. (3) and one of the byproduct of their endless confidence is marketing hype.

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.

Lots of coverage of Trump on renaming New Mexico, New America. But people are too polite to point out Trump has no interest in renaming New England or New Hampshire or New Jersey or New York. It's Mexico and Mexicans and Latinos he wants to taunt. It's childish idiocy, but it's also a dog whistle.

Happy Labor Day, Minnesota! Labor built Minnesota - and Minnesota will always be a labor state. That’s why we banned non-competes, expanded the right to collectively bargain. established paid leave, and strengthened worker protections across the board.

The neo-Nazi party made huge gains in the German elections thanks to the backing of the world‘s biggest billionaire and most prominent publicizer of white nationalist conspiracies on the planet. Good thing there’s no comparable relationship in the US for our media to explore.

Lots of folks in the replies twisting themselves in knots to defend Iran. Yes they were attacked by the U.S. That doesn’t mean they have a right to deliberately attack non-U.S. civilians that have nothing to do with the conflict or even the U.S. That’s actually just a war crime.

Ok here we go: It DOES look like a major purpose of this NIH funding transfer to NIH is to circumvent NIH’s peer review processes so political appointees can have control. Check out the redacted agreement @maxkozlov.bsky.social released: 1/
AGENCY-AGREEMENT-NIH-AND-DOW-REDACTED v
Q
Federal departments, agencies, and offices with respect to the identification of additional priority virus families and other viral pathogens with a significant potential to cause a pandemic" (42
U.S.C. § 285f-5(e)(1)).
Through this agreement, NIH will leverage OASW ND-CBD's procurement, grants, and funding network to allow for critical basic science
I, related research pathways, and basic research to
support the translation and advanced development of medical countermeasures.

This is so basic. It is not USPS' job to decide whether ballots are eligible or not. That's the job of the state election officials. USPS' job is simply to ensure that the ballots get from election officials to the voters and then from the voters back to election officials. That's it.

This is why the "no, we actually have to take Russian concerns about NATO expansion seriously" crowd shouldn't be taken seriously. I once sat beside one of them--in Istanbul--as he mansplained Russia's concerns to a local. They, justly, looked at him as though he'd grown a second head.

I think there's a perversion of the meaning of "liberalism" happening here. It doesn't mean "debate." Like. The defining myth of being an American is that when faced with a tyrant you go to war with your tyrannical government (albeit as a last resort). We have the 2nd amendment FFS.

I sort of miss the days when it was people lining up to tell Americans that they weren't the first democracy/republic actually (as if none of us know this) instead of playing a sort of No True Scotsman game with the definition of "democracy." It's all very dumb.

Winter @winterbedwyr.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
From Orwell's "What is Science?" essay. It's funny to see echoes of the science/humanities "debate" back in 1945. The correct answer is and always has been that we need a well rounded education for a well rounded and informed citizenry.
Orwell argues that scientific education alone will do little good, and indeed may even do harm, without literature and history.
