Exciting to see my first thesis paper in @polstudies.bsky.social! In this article I explore how economic versus cultural values predict left-right self-placement in the UK over the last 10 years, and how this looks different for those identifying on the left versus right. doi.org/10.1177/0032...

Exciting ERC project, and great to see our former Aarhus teammate @muzhou-zhang.bsky.social joining the adventure! 🎉 His beautifully organised (and impressively intricate) JavaScript brought our multilingual surveys to life. A true programming wizard 🧙‍♂️. Can’t wait to follow this new team’s work!

Does losing an election affect politicians' democratic attitudes? A large literature documents a winner–loser gap among voters, but evidence on political elites was long scarce. A series of recent studies has narrowed this gap. A thread on the state of the evidence. 🧵

🏛️ Do party youth wings get a real say? @sofiamarini.bsky.social and @henrikseeberg.bsky.social hand-code 57 youth wing statutes from 11 countries. Most of them have high levels of internal democracy and autonomy from the senior party but low access to the senior party. 🔗 doi.org/10.1080/0140...
Description of the article "How political parties' youth wings are organised: comparative evidence from 57 statutes in 11 countries" by Sofia Marini and Henrik Bech Seeberg, published online first in West European Politics.
Scatter plot of internal democracy in the parent party (x-axis) against internal democracy in its youth wing (y-axis), one marker per pair, with several cases labelled (SF, Forza Italia, Parti Socialiste, Høyre). The fitted line is almost flat and the association is not statistically significant, so knowing how internally democratic a senior party is tells you little about its youth wing.
Small-multiple plot showing the distribution of internal democracy, autonomy and access for the youth wings of each of the 11 countries, with medians marked. Youth wings look more alike within a country than across countries: autonomy is uniformly high in Denmark, Norway and Sweden but low and dispersed in Italy, France and Portugal, and access sits near zero almost everywhere except a few Finnish and Italian cases. Country differences account for much of the variation in internal democracy and autonomy, while party family accounts for essentially none.

Very interesting read. Now I’m wondering whether I have the kind of face that would do well in the government...😂😂😂

Article no. 6 from the YOUMEM project now out! In this one, led by Niklas, we look at the 'added value' of youth wings in terms of shaping the young members that parties say they want.
