I agree with everything you say here. But our current healthcare system is so messed up that I can’t help thinking that maybe the only way out is through. That it might be easier to add market reforms to one big system than to fix our interlocking mess of smaller systems.

BTW, because the news reports did not make it obvious: Most of the incidents where AI got away and hacked something were the results of tests to see what the AI would do if a lot of the safety controls were removed. They were trying to push the AI to see what it would do.

In other words, there's a difference between saying an AI model is doing what we told it to do and actually being able to predict what it will do. I'm not trying to make AI doomer predictions here, but I think it's important that we will find it hard to control systems that we can't predict.

A great deal of software engineering has gone into trying to break down large software systems to make them understandable and therefore predictable. On the other hand, neural network models, such as the LLMs powering current AI systems, are inherently difficult to understand or predict.

As someone who has been telling computers what to do for four decades, I can say that this is completely true. But unfortunately, it's not the whole story. Even without AI, software is so incredibly complex that it can be hard to predict what it will do. This is why there are bugs.

Extinction is a high bar. I can imagine sci-fi scenarios that do a lot of damage to civilization, but extinction of the species? Nah. Any major damage to civilization will also take down the infrastructure that supports the AI. At least with the technology we are likely to have in the near future.

But that's not entirely fair. Eliminating every vulnerability is actually very difficult. The web is a subtle place with confusing corners. And otherwise secure systems are broken when trust boundaries move unexpectedly. Thinking like a hacker is a special skill that requires practice and study.

Even the smartest AI can't hack a truly secure system. You can't exploit vulnerabilities if there are no vulnerabilities. Some people call the AI companies irresponsible for building systems like Mythos that can exploit other systems. But it's also a bit irresponsible to build exploitable systems.

Healthcare economics isn’t as rigorous as physics or even medicine, but it’s a legitimate field of study, which shouldn’t be discarded because of a guy like Bhattacharya. Like it or not, healthcare can’t escape the laws of economics, so we need to understand how they work.

Christ, I’m pretty much a libertarian, and even I think UBI is a pretty good idea. Too many plans to “help the poor” involve giving money to middle-class professionals or corporations to provide services. Give the money to the poor and let them decide what they need.
