My mom was hounded by these operations until her death because these pitches preyed upon her desire to be useful and involved, even as she cognitively deteriorated. She was giving money she didn’t have, subtracting from the money I gave her for groceries, etc. Vile practices, betraying their base.

I think my feelings on Weezer are best summarized by saying that Rivers once sucked in a way that I found intensely relatable as a teenager, but now he sucks in a way that is no longer even remotely relatable. The huge guitar hooks can’t drown out my antipathy for the guy at this point.

I found it tough to acclimate to the finality of it. The “I should tell [parent] about this news” part of the brain doesn’t stop firing overnight. Over a year and a half later, the impulse has slowly been recast as “[parent] would have loved this,” but it’s the same rueful sense of absence.
