If you don't know who Will Eisner is, he's one of the all time great comic book creators. He invented the graphic novel and was one of the few syndicated cartoonists who was an independent creator in the 30s, 40s and 50s. His most famous series was "The Spirit," which appeared in Sunday papers.

The cover shows that Spirit having just been caught under a spotlight. He is looking up at the light and behind him is his logo in large letters. Underneath is says "The well known crime fighter known to the world as The Spirit, is in reality Denny Colt, long believed dead. From his big laboratory in Wildwood Cemetery, he secretly aids society in its war against the forces of evil......only Police Commisioner Dolan knows the Spirit's true identity." In the bottom right corner, there is panel showing the Spirit climbing over a wall just in time to witness a gang killing as a car drives by a man on the street and he is about to be gunned down.

The Spirit from September 5, 1948. Art by Will Eisner & letters by Abe Kanegson.
There is a small man in a suit flying. Above him, it reads:
"Before we begin the story we want to make one point very clear...THIS IS NOT A FUNNY STORY! And while the author does not expect you to believe all of this, he feels bound to assure you that he cannot guarantee a complete absence of resemblance between persons living or dead and the characters here portrayed. We mean to give you a simple account of Gerard Shnobble...beginning at the point when he first discovered he could fly. Please...no laughter..."

The cover shows a small man in a suit and hat, and a white spiral is emanating out from him and growing larger. In the background is a giant gray shadow of the man with blackness behind that. On the top, it reads "Some men aspire to wealth...some men aspire to power... some men aspire to rule...but all Herkimer Zither ever desires from fate was to be the...The First Man."

Will Eisner's The Spirit from August 17, 1952. Art by Wally Wood.
The cover shows the Spirit wearing an astronaut suit, accompanied by several men, and they are all climbing a cliff on the moon. In the distance we can see a rocket ship and the Earth is in the sky.. The Spirit warns them to keep out of the sunlight. On the left is a card that reads:
"OUTER SPACE by Will Eisner.
Entry # 4
HEAT. We have come upon a great wall stretching approximately 15 miles, most of it perfectly straight. We will climb it...it is 1500 feet high and from it we estimate we will be able to examine miles of planet without having to walk...instruments show a frightfully low temperature in the shadows. in the sünlight it is boiling...We do not know whether our equipment can really stand up under the intense heat. We'll know when we reach the top...until then we climb in the shadows."

The top of the page has the logo of "The Spirit by Will Eisner." In a box on the right, it reads "That shadow, my likeness that goes to and from, seeking a livelihood, chattering, chattering...How often I find myself standing and looking at it where it fits...How often I question and doubt whether that is really me... Walt Whitman." On the bottom, the Spirit is standing with his arms and legs stretched out with his hands forming claws. He almost looks like his wrists are chained up but they are not. His giant shadow can be seen looming in the background, taking up almost the entire left side of the page.

A very detailed scene of a sidewalk along a river, with a street sign reading "The Spirit by Will Eisner logo." There are puddles on the ground, a sewer grate cover, and a railing near the water. There are also street lamps lighting the scene. Across the water we can see the city skyline at night, with a ship passing in front of it. The reflection of the skyline can be seen in the water.

There is a center image of a young boy holding a globe. In the bottom left panel, he is taking notes while looking at the globe. In the bottom right panel, he is dressed like someone from colonial days who is off to travel (and colonize other people’s land). It reads, “Oh, what has happened to the great urge to explore…oh, where is the intrepid youth of our grandfathers’ era who, during the month of June was to embark on great explorations. Alas, there are but a few left…and today we give you Sammy, perhaps the last of the great explorers.”

The Spirit logo is in the background, spread over the entire page. Several caption boxes tell of a criminal, Artemus Peap, who escaped from police in a rocket built by Adolphe Link and was never heard from again. Several days ago, at Yellow Sands Ordinance Proving Grounds, twelve rockets were shot into space with cameras. One day later, they returned but now there were thirteen. In three small panels at the bottom of the page, we can see a rocket crash into the surface and one man emerge.

The Spirit originally published on May 19, 1946. Art by Will Eisner & Jack Spranger, with letters by Martin DeMuth.
The top of the page shows a small island in the ocean. Above it are clouds forming the words “The Spirit by Will Eisner.” The next few panels slowly close in on a small shack on the island with two men inside. One laments that he is the sole owner of “a gold filled rock” but cannot do anything about it because he is wanted by the police everywhere and can’t bring equipment to the island to mine it. The other man just arrived on the island because he had to flee the ship he was on to escape the Spirit. He has the original man if he can assist his pet buzzard since he is a doctor. Apparently, the Spirit broke its neck in their last encounter and it’s never quite healed. The old doctor suggests he just keep it in splints for a while.

This week opens with the Spirit's logo colored with the Stars and Stripes. There is a fairly unremarkable looking soldier, and next to him is a profile card that says "O'Toole, Titmouse J., Corporal in the Army of the USA. Human phenomenon...soldier extraordinary...a man among men...a soldier...physique...slight eyes...soft and affectionate." In a section titled Remarks, it says "Quire remarkable and entirely beyond our comprehension."
