Just make it exist first, you can make it good later.
Very first thumbnail sketch for the painting from 2021. Very loose drawing of 4 pokemon themed monster hunters fighting a monster hunter styled charizard. Very detailed painting of 4 pokemon themed monster hunters fighting a monster hunter styled charizard. It only took a solid year of time to paint this after a 4 year break from starting the thumbnail. Putting a lot of emphasis on the "later" in "make it good later"

Newest #watercolor #paleoart is the newly described tyrannosaur, Tromelosaurus solumons “frightful lizard from the lonely mountain”. I referenced Smaug’s scene from the Hobbit in a few ways here. See if you can figure them out.

The crest didn't seem to have an aerodynamic function, but speculative reconstructions give it a membrane however this remains inconclusive.

A small late Cretaceous pterosaur that possessed an extremely long branched crest. Nyctosaurus lacked all fingers but the wing finger giving it a much harder time to live terrestrially.
render of a stylized Nyctosaurus model

the pterosaur is white with black outlining around the beak, wings, on the back, crest, and feet. the beak is yellow with a blue bit near the base. the front of the crest is yellow.

Today's four random works of palaeoart: Jan Sovak's Jobaria and Afrovenator, @markwitton.bsky.social's Dimorphodon, Peter Zallinger's Scelidosaurus, and Steve Kirk's Liopleurodon!
A earthy-toned Jobaria rears up in a defense as an Afrovenator charges toward it. Clouds of dust billow into the air with he movement of the giant reptiles, and a group of pterosaurs soar overhead.A reddish brown Dimorphodon with wings streaked with violet, red, and yellow soars through a cloudy orange sky.A spiny, studded Scelidosaurus with a coppery-coloured hide stands on a sandy riverside, investigating the vivid green ferns sprouting up around it. A torpedo-shaped pliosaur with broad, oar-like fins and an inky grey-white pattern on its glossy skin.

A portrait of Dale Russell's "dinosauroid" for #FossilFriday. The creation of this iconic #specevo concept is stranger than most of us realise, being inspired not only by science but also (probably) Russell's faith and worldview, too. This artwork is based on a maquette created by Ely Kish...
A portrait of Dale Russell's "dinosauroid", essentially a reptilian humanoid, holding a small pot and a paintbrush. The pose is based on a maquette created by palaeoartist Ely Kish, who rendered this figure from posterior view as a cave-painting, Palaeolithic dinosauroid (see https://cdnsciencepub.com/cms/10.1139/cjes-2020-0172/asset/images/large/cjes-2020-0172f8.jpeg).

i had the opportunity to see the Herugavialis cairensis material and paper early to illustrate it ahead of time! congrats to Burke et al. (2026) on the paper
at night by the shoreline of Eocene Egypt, a bright light illuminates a Herugavialis that's caught a pycnodont, seafoam crashes around the large gavialoid

Herugavialis is a marine gavialolid (relatives of gharials and false gharials) that lived in Egypt. its morphology was relatively similar to extant ghavialoids, but it differs in key skeletal features, like the lack of a maxilla process within its lacrimal gland, a feature which all extant crocodilians have. another thing that makes it special is that its holotype comes from the same rock layers used to construct the Great Sphinx of Giza

NEW art today! This one is... pretty different for me. Hope you like it!
A digital painting showing a woman and dinosaur (a baryonyx) crossing the street. The Baryonyx is glowing blue, and the two are bound together by a rope and harness. It's not entirely clear who is leading who. There are also four green glowing velociraptors peppered throughout the scene. The velociraptors and baryonyx seem to regard each other with wariness, but the woman simply stares straight ahead, focused on her destination.

I'm a bit late, but "Great Maia" might be one of, if not *the* best Dinosauria short. If nothing else, it may have the best portrayal of Maiasaura (and hadrosaurs in general) in a film. Visually, emotionally and for the animals' characterization, David Armsby outdid himself.
A gigantic old female Maiasaura striding among her herd on a bright day, another less massive Maiasaura watching her.A mother Maiasaura fighting against a Daspletosaurus torosus attacking her and her nest on a dark, stormy night. An injured Maiasaura being defended by the rest of her herd, including the gigantic matriarch "Great Maia", from an attack on a stormy night.Maiasaura nesting alongside two resting juveniles, with the old matriarch bringing plant fodder for a lone hatchling resting inside her nest.
