And our third story is "Flight Patterns of the Dead" by @kcpickelsimer.bsky.social and @hisiheyah.bsky.social Help us get this book funded to see the full finished stories and art! www.kickstarter.com/projects/bon...

When I am stranded in the lands of Death, two things give me hope. The first is that my baby daughter Linna isn’t here; the second is that my grandmother, somewhere, is. Grandma Orta died months ago, slumped over her old green notebook, but when she was alive she knew more than anyone about everything and she probably still does. And Linna must have survived whatever shattering thing stranded me in this place, or she’d be here with me now. I will drag my battered, breathing body out of Death and back to Linna, and my grandmother will help me.
Flight Patterns of the Dead by E.M. Linden

Our second story is "Death Recoming" by @andrewbelindo.bsky.social and @careydraws.bsky.social

"Happy 2000!"
You hear the words as though they're from afar. You're still falling, no longer the gentle drifting of consciousness, the sweet lulling of sleep, but more the sensation of falling off a building in a dream that lingers with you even after you jolt back awake. You can only assume your mind is hearing those words from beyond the veil of death, mind clinging desperately to the body it knows so well.
The year is wrong. It should say 2050. But maybe you misheard.
And then, suddenly, you're awake.

Death Recoming by Andrew Belindo

Our first story is "Irreparable Evolution" by @kcpickelsimer.bsky.social and @yellghoul.bsky.social Here are the opening lines and one of the concept sketches for the story!

Text laid over a starry night background reads: "The world has begun to move so quickly that we forget that the very ground we walk over is filled with the bones of our ancestors. Layer upon layer of life crushed under the weight of progress, celebrated when remembered but mostly ignored. We forget that, when looking for the lost ruins of what once were our great civilizations, that the homes were not always empty and the people were not without life. We trample the altars of their gods and expect to walk away all the greater for it. " -K.C. Pickelsimer, Irreparable Evolution

A sketched illustration concept by Jade Zhang, in the ruins of an ancient city, a huge and monstrous harpy-like creature is perched on a half broken arch, looming over two tiny figures below.

Last but not least for our writers is @emlinden.bsky.social with Flight Patterns of the Dead! After this mother's death, she learns what life means after death as she fights to return to her child. www.kickstarter.com/projects/bonedu…

Snippet:
“I need to move. There’s no time to do more. At least the book is back in life, and legible. It has escaped Death; now it must survive the blood, ash, rank water and pooling oil of the bomb blast.
I sidestep my broken body and walk up the last three stairs, towards Linna’s pram. I don’t know what I’m looking for until the glint catches my eye. The charm. The silver bird, the swallow charm. Long, narrow wings and a forked tail. It lies in the dust, thrown into the road when the pram skidded. Protecting the asphalt from misfortune.
On the back, our name is scratched in the calligraphy of our language. Orchard or garden. Something with roots; something that can grow.
Something to tell Linna who she is.”

Irreparable Evolution by @kcpickelsimer.bsky.social An expedition to find a lost dwarven city takes a turn for the worse when they discover not all inhabitants abandoned it. A survivor recounts their tale. www.kickstarter.com/projects/bonedu…

Snippet of KC's writing:

“I woke to murmuring and crawled around the legs of a god to find a figure knelt before the statue of Amyryth. If running had not helped us and logic failed, worship did not seem so far-fetched a plan. My sleep had been deep - deep enough to sleep through horrors and tragedy and the last ditch effort of desperate men. Not deep enough to give me rest.

Do you see? Fear is powerful.
It can turn a man of faith into a lost soul and a nonbeliever into the devout worshiper in a mere moment. Fear can grow and grow and grow in the dark spaces of the mind until there is nothing the body won’t do to release it.”

Death Recoming by @andrewbelindo.bsky.social! This is an infinite time loop story of queer self discovery while adopting a cat over, and over, and over again. www.kickstarter.com/projects/bonedu…

Story snippet:
“Too late, you realize that you can’t hold the things you lost in clenched fists while also reaching for what you hold most dear. You’ve ruined this life with your own greed for perfection.
You’ve failed. There’s no point in trying anymore, so you let the flow of time sweep you away. If this is indeed a time loop, all you have to do is make it to sixty. It doesn’t matter how. But after sixty, you’ll maybe have a fresh attempt, a new chance to fix everything.
In the meantime, the world is an unfamiliar one. Friends are strangers and strangers are friends. You become impossibly lonely. It’s not something that can be fixed with a few friends.
It’s the deep, yawning loneliness of knowing it’s just you, alone, living these countless days that you no longer recognize as your own life.”
