Concept art by Angela Hsieh showing a woman with long dark hair approaching a glass booth filled with strange smoke0like figures in uniforms with glowing points for eyes, mouths not where they should be, and tentacles tapping at the glass.

Carey Pietsch @careydraws.bsky.social strikes a clever balance between storytelling and eye-catching shapes in "Death Recoming" by Andrew Belindo @andrewbelindo.bsky.social where the only real anchor in a 50-year time loop is adopting the same angry cat again and again.

Concept art by Carey Pietsch depicting a hand trying to pet and getting bitten by a very angry cat, mirrored to resemble an infinity loop.

A sketched illustration concept by Jade Zhang, in the ruins of an ancient city, a huge and monstrous harpy-like creature is perched on a half broken arch, looming over two tiny figures below.

The cover for The Traitor & the Wretch, illustrated by Amy Phillips. A greyscale black and white illustration with the look of a charcoal and pencil drawing shows two men, each seemingly running from something. Knell, with grey skin and long tangled hair, looks frightened as chains and bones try to drag him downward. Percy, a scarred man with paler skin and shirt dark hair welds a dagger and is looking over his shoulder, he is surrounded by a halo of stylized blades.

A book map for Heavy Are The Years showing the cover (made by Riotbones) that reads: Three illustrated stories in one volume!

An archeological crew discovers an ancient city but the gods who were once worshiped there have turned... strange.

The eternity of a 50-year time loop, and using it to adopt the world's angriest cat, again and again.

Love and grief across generations as a young mother fights death itself to be reunited with her baby, recruiting the help of strange and familiar spirits.

Now live on kickstarter!

Check out these two story teasers from authors @emlinden.bsky.social and @andrewbelindo.bsky.social featuring a woman who isn't about to let death get in her way, and someone trapped in a time loop who keeps meeting death every 50 years.

When I am stranded in the lands of Death, two things give me hope. The first is that my baby daughter Linna isn’t here; the second is that my grandmother, somewhere, is. Grandma Orta died months ago, slumped over her old green notebook, but when she was alive she knew more than anyone about everything and she probably still does. And Linna must have survived whatever shattering thing stranded me in this place, or she’d be here with me now. I will drag my battered, breathing body out of Death and back to Linna, and my grandmother will help me.
Flight patterns of the Dead by E.M. Linden

Happy 2000!"
You hear the words as though they're from afar. You're still falling, no longer the gentle drifting of consciousness, the sweet lulling of sleep, but more the sensation of falling off a building in a dream that lingers with you even after you jolt back awake. You can only assume your mind is hearing those words from beyond the veil of death, mind clinging desperately to the body it knows so well.
The year is wrong. It should say 2050. But maybe you misheard.
And then, suddenly, you're awake.

Last but not least for our writers is @emlinden.bsky.social with Flight Patterns of the Dead! After this mother's death, she learns what life means after death as she fights to return to her child. www.kickstarter.com/projects/bonedu…

Snippet:
“I need to move. There’s no time to do more. At least the book is back in life, and legible. It has escaped Death; now it must survive the blood, ash, rank water and pooling oil of the bomb blast.
I sidestep my broken body and walk up the last three stairs, towards Linna’s pram. I don’t know what I’m looking for until the glint catches my eye. The charm. The silver bird, the swallow charm. Long, narrow wings and a forked tail. It lies in the dust, thrown into the road when the pram skidded. Protecting the asphalt from misfortune.
On the back, our name is scratched in the calligraphy of our language. Orchard or garden. Something with roots; something that can grow.
Something to tell Linna who she is.”
