ROMANTIC MEDIA AND WARTIME NETWORKS, my first monograph, is out today with @stanfordpress.bsky.social. It tells the story of how the state revolutionized its wartime communication networks in the Romantic period and how writers responded to - and resisted - this media revolution.

Had a chance to visit Plas Newydd, the home of the Ladies of Llangollen, on our most recent visit to the UK. I was struck by what a glorious collage it is of wood panelling and fragments of medieval stained glass. An incredible place!

Sorry, I don't want the text to be easily copied so haven't included it here. The cover of O'er A' My Labours Sey Your Skill. It shows a line drawing of Edinburgh in black and white with a blue and yellow sky. Part of the contents page of O'er A' My Labours Sey Your Skill. There is a list of about 15 poems, including Foostie Oysters by Albert Kirk Jr. Just to prove I'm telling the truth and that.

Why are Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey Austen's neglected novels? Lovely to write this article for The Conversation's Jane Austen 250 series!

Jane Austen: why are adaptations of Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey so rare?
Unlike the usual Austen narratives, these two novels are concerned with wider, more serious issues that perhaps puts TV and film-makers off.

Statue of poet Robert Fergusson, in bronze, outside Edinburgh's Canongate Kirk. The statue depicts Fergusson walking along the street with book under his arm. He's dressed in an eighteenth-century coat (which flaps back in the wind), breeches and boots. His hair is tied back. It's snowing, with show on the ground and gathered on the statue.An extract from Fergusson's 'The Daft Days', his poem in Scots on the Christmas and New Year holidays:
When merry Yule-day comes, I trou,
You'll scantlins find a hungry mou;
Sma are our cares, our stamacks fou
O' gusty gear,
And kickshaws, strangers to our view,
Sin fairn-year.
