Yesterday, Missourians had the final say on one of the most important state policy debates this year: whether to eliminate their personal income tax, which funds two-thirds of their budget, while raising taxes on many working people. They voted it down. missouriindependent.com/2026/08/04/m...

Missouri voters resoundingly rejected major Republican priorities on Tuesday as proposals to eliminate the income tax and change the way majorities are counted lost by large margins across the state.

These former governors are right: the SNAP cost shift is a ticking time bomb for state budgets. States will have to pay 100s of millions annually + had no say in its design or time to prepare. Extending the full 2-year delay to every state is a fair fix. www.hickenlooper.senate.gov/press_releas...

Big news! In a historic vote last week, the California Assembly’s Revenue & Taxation committee pushed back against *40 years* of corporate lobbying to advance a bill (AB 1790) that would eliminate CA tax avoidance by the world’s most powerful corporations. connolly.asmdc.org/press-releas...

Happy #TaxDay! While millions of Americans file their returns today, statehouses across the country are making decisions that will shape who pays, who gains, & who gets left behind for years to come. And right now, states are headed in two VERY different directions. Some context:

UPDATE: THEY DELIVERED! Gov. Mills just signed Maine's millionaires tax into law. This is a huge step forward for tax justice and a testament to advocates in Maine (s/o to @mecep.bsky.social!) and across the country for reminding us that taxing the wealthy is both popular and possible.

For too long, our tax code asked the most of those with the least. Today, that changes. In a historic move for tax fairness in Maine, Governor Mills just signed a millionaire tax into law as part of the state's supplemental budget. #mepolitics

When we talk about "SNAP cuts," we mean real people — parents stretching every dollar at the grocery store, kids depending on stable meals. Our new tracker puts numbers behind who's being harmed, state by state. Check it. Bookmark it. Share it!

ICYMI: Maine's Approps Committee passed a millionaires tax last week! The 2% surcharge on income over $1M will affect just 0.4% of taxpayers but is projected to generate $96M in FY27 alone. Gov. Mills is on board. Now it’s up to the legislature to deliver. www.mecep.org/news/stateme...

Last week, I outlined questions I would be looking to have answered when the President’s budget is released. Now that we have the full proposal, we can now answer them. Hint: It fails to offer affordability solutions to make life more affordable while raising the risk of hasty, harmful cuts. 🧵

The President’s FY27 Budget guts programs that protect the environment, promote health, and reduce energy bills. Some of the most egregious cuts include eliminating LIHEAP, halving the EPA’s budget, and reprogramming billions of funds for renewable energy. More below:

It is amazing! The Admin can propose anything it wants & this hateful, harmful budget is what they throw down. Evicting formally homeless people from their homes, cutting food asst for kids & older adults, reducing utility payment asst, narrowing energy options...etc...etc..

After enacting the deepest SNAP cuts in history last year, President Trump’s 2027 budget would continue to make groceries less affordable for low-income families. It would slash the WIC fruit & vegetable benefit by $1.4 billion & eliminate a food program for low-income seniors.

A few initial thoughts on the President’s FY27 budget. Big picture: Today’s budget isn’t a serious plan to address real issues facing families and the nation and isn’t worthy of the American people.

I’m so excited to attend WA’s bill signing today for our new #MillionairesTax! WA is a great place to live & work & play - and the millionaires will stay (according to research on MA’s similar tax).

WA passed a Millionaires Tax. Instead of celebrating the *many* benefits of taxing the ultra-rich, headlines are asking “Will the rich flee?!” 😑 This claim’s been tested. Large-scale tax flight does not happen. And even when a wealthy few leave, gains for everyone else win out.

Need some good news? Washington state just passed a 9.9% tax on households earning >$1 million/year AND expanded its state EITC to 460K families! Gov. Ferguson says he’ll sign the measures into law. It's a huge step forward for one of the country’s most inequitable tax systems.

States are increasingly calling for special sessions this year, and it’s not just routine business. From addressing the impact of federal policy, to state tax debates, to shoring up disaster aid and political power plays, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of legislative overtime.🧵

The flooding deaths in TX are horrific. We can't say for sure if they were preventable, but we do know 2 things: 1. Accurate flood maps, early warning systems, and timely disaster response saves lives. 2. Funding cuts at NOAA and FEMA will kill people.

The national school voucher proposal in the Senate GOP reconciliation plan would threaten students’ access to quality public schools, give tax breaks to the wealthy, & override states that have rejected these harmful policies. Lawmakers who care about our kids’ futures should reject it.

Senate Republican leaders have revised their plan to cut #SNAP. The details are slightly different, but the bottom line is the same: this would still take food assistance away from millions of low-income people, raise families’ grocery costs & risk some states ending SNAP altogether.

Today’s initial estimate for Q1 2025 GDP is -0.3%. This estimate is driven by economic uncertainty from the Administration’s chaotic tariff regime. After inheriting a robust economy, it is heading in the wrong direction. (1/6)
