It's rare to be able to put an identifiable image of a place in early modern London next to a textual reference to that place: the Nag's Head on Cheapside, 1613 and 1638

Deep gratitude to the archivists at @thelondonarchives.bsky.social who tracked down documents for me based on an obsolete reference in a 100y/o book - it was particularly satisfying and evocative to see the “deed of the king’s grant by his green seal” described in a now-lost C15th church inventory 📜
A photograph of a medieval charter, with an elaborately decorated initial “H”. Attached is a largely complete great seal of green wax, showing the king sitting in majesty, affixed by a green and white twisted cord.

Incidentally, I’ll be speaking about how #London merchants invested in, transformed, and were commemorated in rural parish churches in England before the Reformation - such as this monumental brass to the mercer and alderman John Lambard at St Nicholas Hinxworth #Skystorians #MedievalSky
Photograph of the floor of a church chancel, featuring a large tomb slab inset with engraved brass figures and shields. The main two (John and Anne Lambard) are positioned with five smaller figures representing their children. John is wearing an aldermanic gown, denoting his status as one of London’s leading citizens.A close up photograph of the brass figures of John and Anne Lambard. John’s face is depicted with wrinkles, and you can see his aldermanic gown and a purse attached to his belt. There are remnants of prayer scrolls proceeding from their mouths to a shield with an image of the maiden’s head, representing the Mercers’ Company and the Virgin Mary.Detail of the smaller depictions of the Lambard children. On the left is a boy with long hair, a long gown, and a purse. Next, a larger figure of a man is dressed in clerical robes with a tonsure. Finally, a woman in contemporary dress - she is Jane Shore, the mistress of Edward IV.A close up image of Lambard’s merchant mark on a shield.

#OTD in 1517, rioters ran through the streets of London on Evil May Day, targeting immigrant workers. It’s a familiar story: nativist rioters felt that "strangers" (immigrants) were stealing their jobs. The riot itself was mild but the royal reaction was severe, resulting in many executions. 🧵 1/11
