Buy Canadian: Why It Matters and How to Actually Do It | Tod Maffin CBC Interview
Amid the ongoing Canada-US trade war, Tod Maffin joins CBC's BC Today to talk about buying Canadian, supporting small businesses hit by tariffs, and why "Buy Canadian" is more complicated than it sounds.
Tod is a former CBC Radio host, and the creator of two projects helping Canadians shop local:
🇨🇦 Main Street Canada: a directory connecting shoppers with small Canadian businesses affected by tariffs, from handmade clothing to art and diapers. https://mainstreet.todmaffin.com
🇨🇦 Unplug America: a growing list of Canadian-owned tech alternatives to replace American apps and services you use every day. https://unplug.todmaffin.com
In this interview, Tod explains:
Why "Canadian-owned" and "made in Canada" are not always the same thing
Which big-box retailers only LOOK Canadian (Walmart Canada, Costco Canada, Rona)
Which ones are genuinely Canadian-owned (Home Hardware, London Drugs)
Why buying Canadian is harder for seniors and people on fixed incomes, and how to help without spending more
How tariffs have shifted paperwork and cost burdens onto small Canadian vendors, not just American buyers
Why seasonal, local produce buying makes a bigger difference than most people think
Plus calls from across BC weighing in on their own buy-Canadian habits, from Fort St. John to Prince Rupert to Victoria.
Topics covered: buy Canadian, Canadian made products, tariffs, trade war, small business Canada, Canadian alternatives to American products, shop local Canada, Canadian-owned companies, Main Street Canada, Unplug America.
