New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

Classes start tomorrow for the quarter (yes, we start late in Oregon!) so the campus is filled w parents helping their kids move in for the first time. I’d say in 90% of cases it’s obvious the parents are more nervous than the students. 😅

For those who don’t know, twins especially ruin your stomach muscles so they’re no longer attached as they were, so I “look pregnant” even tho I’m basically back at birth weight. Physical therapist says it’ll be two years before things are back to normal bc IRL that’s how bodies work

Y’all, I am so fucking tired of people assuming I’m pregnant. 3+ people assumed I was this week, all in work/ conference situations where I had to just politely explain that I had twins 6 months ago over going off on how rude they’re being. Really a self esteem killer guys ☹️

Yea this work TBH was spurred by the thinking that the biggest exoplanets are likely similar to the smallest BDs. Tho that’s kinda a cop out too bc the theory isn’t settled on how their magnetic fields get so strong either!

We ruled out the moon option for reasons my maternity leave brain no longer remembers. It has something to do w known details about a potential moon being ruled out of a certain size at the needed location elsewhere in the literature. So yea, maybe the disk! Time for theorists to have fun! :)

So, this is exciting! We applied for 50+ hours in the latest MeerKAT cycle to confirm periodicity and I hope we get it! It's the early days, but I think it's the start of something beautiful- a brand new way to learn about other worlds. 🪐
