I'm very thankful for @gloriouscow.bsky.social and MartyPC ... if not for it, the game I'm currently developing would only be playable by those who own original IBM PC and CGA hardware.

DOS Friends! A new mTCP is available! This version is mostly a maintenance release, except for NetDrive which has some major improvements. (It is faster, especially on remote links.) Downloads and release notes are at www.brutman.com/mTCP/mTCP.html. #retrocomputing

I opened up a mystery chip; it turned out to be a "switched capacitor filter" from 1984. Filters are important circuits, for example, adjusting the bass or treble in an audio signal. This chip, the MF10, was popular because it combined two filters into an easy-to-use chip. Let's take a closer look…
A die photo of the chip under a microscope. It is rectangular, with complicated horizontal and vertical white lines (the metal wiring layer). It has some reddish regions, in particular 72 small reddish squares in the middle (the capacitors). Underneath, the silicon is gray. Around the edges, 20 tiny bond wires are attached to pads; these wires connect the die to the external package.

Oh, that is cool. I'm definitely going to have to save up a little and get my hands on one of those!

Have you tried any CPU benchmarks on the Book8088? I've read that their performance is faster like an NEC V20.

Our AI disclosure: wesleygames.com/ai-disclosure/ In summary: Our games will be made by humans because we think making games is often more fun than playing games. However, there is a small asterisk on that which for some will disqualify us from using that label, and we understand and respect that.

My Namelib is finally available! It can read in ASCII text in a language, and spit out names that vaguely sound like that language, giving each faction or region in your game its own flavour. You can get the library on its Itch page: cyningstan.itch.io/namelib #msdos #gamedev

Here's our first sneak peek of what we're creating for the #MSTRES game jam! This is running on stock CGA at 30fps, but it will likely require MartyPC for emulation.

Planning on Star Cadre: Team Command started as soon as #StarCadre Combat Class was released in 2024, but most of the work went on during 2026. This game was completed with the help of a team of volunteer beta testers. Get it from cyningstan.itch.io/star-cadre-t... #ibmpc #msdos #cga
A screenshot of Star Cadre: Team Command, showing the simple New Game screen. The "Expansions" label hints that there is more to come. Beta testers had the patience to play through many games in order to help isolate bugs and other issues with the game, and their time is much appreciated.

Hopefully, before the end of this week, we'll be releasing an alpha demo of our first game we'll be releasing for the #MSTRES game jam! We're excited to show off a new port of a game that's been ported to just about every other platform except MS-DOS PCs ... using only stock IBM CGA graphics.

A new tactical combat game for #msdos has been released! #StarCadre Team Command puts you in charge of a squad of elite operatives in the far future, conducting special missions on behalf of an interstellar civilisation. Get it from cyningstan.itch.io/star-cadre-t... #ibmpc #cga
A collage of screenshots of Star Cadre: Team Command against a background image. The background images shows the K-53 modified fighter craft in the foreground, that takes the away team on their missions, on a landing pad beside its hangar, with planting around, a city scape behind, mountains in the far distance. The screenshots are all in 4-colour CGA. They include: the title screen which is a 4-colour version of the background image, a mission taking place in an industrial complex, and the personnel screen where a new recruit is being added to the team.

Progress continues on our #MSTRES entry! We're at the point where I'm trying to learn about how to implement the infamous "ANSI from hell". 🙃

I'm testing some ludicrous features in CGA for this #MSTRES game jam ... if this works out, I'm going to have to create a second, emulator-friendly version so I can actually submit it. :O

I went into the #MSTRES game jam (my first jam!) thinking I'd make some kind of platforming game, because I've already shown myself I can make that. Just a couple of weeks into this, I've made some serendipitous discoveries that have completely changed what I'm going to make. This is fun!
