Re-posting this because from all the "yay Canada, this is good" responses, I see I didn't strongly enough stress the main point I meant to make, which is that well-intentioned efforts like this that rely solely on the honor system are essentially meaningless

OnThisDay in 1849, Edgar Allan Poe passed away under mysterious circumstances. Of all the artists who gave life to Poe's macabre tales over the years, perhaps none captured them quite so brilliantly as the Irish artist Harry Clarke publicdomainreview.tumblr.com/post/8298154...

Literally everything I've written for public consumption is in the training data, often in more than one language. Via the Anthropic settlement I'm getting (not nearly enough) compensation for about 20 of them, but it's doubtful I'll ever get compensation for 28 years of writing on my blog, etc.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 12667: This is going to be controversial, but hear me out: Don't let anyone (ANYONE) in or out of publishing label you as "the new X", however popular X may currently be. You'll be judged as second-rate and unoriginal before your book has even come out...

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

I was just listening to a (paid) lecture online and I wondered why the guy kept waffling in the introduction. I thought, 'this sounds like AI', but I knew it was an actual human talking because I know the guy. Turns out he used chatGPT to write the intro and other parts of the lecture. He said so.

I used to get very grumpy about those posts where people advised writers never to give up submitting. I'd given up years ago. Well... I saw a call for an anthology on a subject I'm really passionate about and wrote a new story specially for it. They've accepted it. And it's a paid market

Not only did I meet Robert Kraft, I worked for him. His kid Jonathan asked me to “remove the black music” from my gameday playlist in ‘94 & I refused so they fired me. I was the cheerleader director at the time. I sued them for wrongful termination and won. So yes, I know that motherfucker.

The only thing I'm going to say about this day: A lot of people who didn't deserve to die were murdered 25 years ago. Then other immoral people used them as an excuse to murder many more innocent people under the guise of freedom. None of those people deserved to die.

This is one of the objections I have when people talk about how useful LLMs can be for literature searches or for any kind of search, really. Even beyond the biases that inevitably (and, in some cases, intentionally) show up, part of a good literature search is seeing information *in context.*

I ended up having more extended thoughts on Dolly Parton over on Facebook and I thought I would share them here as well.
When I was much younger, I knew her mostly as a caricature and the object of jokes, because young men are kind of stupid that way and I was no exception, and because she willingly played along with the joke, in part because she knew it would happen anyway, and this way she got to shape some of how that would play out for her, and use it for her own ends. It took me a while to realize how canny that was.

When I got older, I learned that underneath the caricature was a formidable songwriting and business mind. I had an inkling of what a rare combination that was in any person, but how even more rare it was for someone who was who she was, in the field and environment she worked in. Hidden in all those sparkles was a spine of steel.

When I got older than that I learned that in addition to a brilliant mind was a heart of kindness, which directed so much of the good fortune she amassed to herself right back out the door through philanthropic work, helping those in her communities, state and country, and which allowed to see the worth and dignity in those whom so many others treated (and still do treat) with contempt.

She was always all the things she was. What changed was my ability to see and understand who she was. I'm glad I was eventually smart enough to see it all.

We’re going to hear about how everyone loved Dolly, and that feels true. But it’s good to remember, and to her credit, that she was attacked for her AIDS activism, her vaccine advocacy, her LGBTQ+ support and even, more recently, for her reading initiatives. She ALWAYS stood firm when it mattered.
