Borghino BB1
The Borghino BB1 is a beautiful archtop classical guitar with a single cutaway and two F-holes. It's got a GraphTech Ghost pickup system that's controlled by three concentric knobs. One controls the volume for the piezo output and MIDI output, one is a bass and treble control, and the third is a mid and mid sweep control. In addition to the regular 1/4" jack, there's a 13-pin MIDI output. The fretboard ends in a wave, and the neck is topped by a slotted 3/3 headstock that also ends in a wave..

Put strings and hardware on this thing since I’m not going to spray final clear this year because I put it off too long again. Oh god does it need fretwork, but it sounds killer and the death bucker is awesome. It looks very homemade but it’s probably never leaving home, so, y’know. Tuned to A

HS Anderson HS-ARS
It's been a while since I posted a pre-Steinberger headless, so here's one that I've only been able to find in catalogs. The HS Anderson HS-ARS is an electric guitar with a symmetrical body. Instead of having two cutaway horns that point towards the headstock, this guitar has two horns that flare outwards. It's got two mini-humbuckers that are controlled by one volume knob, two tone knobs, and a 3-way switch. The tuners are fanned out at the end of the body, behind the bridge. There is a vestigial headstock, but there's nothing there besides the truss rod cover and tailpiece where the strings are inserted.

This picture is from an HS Anderson catalog that was released in the mid 70s. The picture of the guitar is in black and white and flanked by two paragraphs of Japanese text, as well as a label that says HS-ARS to the right of the guitar. The text below the guitar gives the specs. I'll post the text that's below the label in the next picture. Here's a translated version of the Japanese text I mentioned in the first picture. It reads:

The ARS, which fulfills the dream of many guitar players --reverse tuning-- is a guitar that represents the culmination of Anderson'a research, for which he holds numerous patents. It's not simply a matter of moving the tuning pegs to the body; it's a magnificent form crafted based on acoustics and playability.

Jon Kammerer Pegasus
The Jon Kammerer Pegasus is an acoustic guitar that was designed to reduce feedback when it's plugged in via the LR Baggs piezo in the bridge. It's got a double-cutaway body shape, and the top and bottom of the guitar have been CNC routed and contoured. Instead of having a central soundhole, there's a hole on either side of the strings that starts around the cutaway and extends all the way down the body. They end at the end of the body, roughly in line with the bridge. These long soundholes keep low frequencies from resonating and causing feedback. The neck has 24 frets, but it looks like somebody's taken a nibble off the end of the bass side. It's topped by a very narrow 3/3 headstock.

Serracini custom
I found a modern guitar that's a nice counterpart to the one I posted yesterday. Hold on tight, because this thing is weird.

Here's Italian guitarist Luca Stricagnoli holding a triple-neck acoustic guitar that was made for him by fellow Italian Davide Serracini.

The top neck has 6 strings and can be tuned like a normal guitar, but Luca has it tuned to an open tuning that I haven't been able to find out.
The middle (soprano) neck has 7 treble strings that are tuned to a major scale, but without the 7th note.

The third (bass) neck has a fretboard that extends all the way down to where the bridge is on the middle neck. It has three strings that are tuned high to low, and it's only fretted on 2/3rds of the length. The best way I can describe it is to imagine taking a right-handed Steinberger bass and attaching it to a right-handed acoustic guitar so the fretboard of the bass is under the bridge of the acoustic and the body hangs off the end.

I dunno how anybody comes up with this stuff, but this account wouldn't exist if they didn't.

Chevrier Harpo-lyre
This harpo-lyre was probably built by French luthier André Augustin Chevrier around 1830. It's got a round body and has three necks. If you look at the guitar with the necks pointing up and the body pointing down like it is in this picture, the left neck has seven strings and is tuned chromatically (A-B flat-B-c-d flat-d-e flat). The middle neck has six strings and is tuned like a normal guitar. The right neck has eight strings and is tuned diatonically (c'-d'-e'-f'-g'-a'-b'-c2). Each neck has its own small soundhole, the bridge is one long mustache-shaped piece, and the headstock is one of the wildest things I've ever seen. It comes out of the center neck and branches off into two curves. Each curve terminates where it meets the neck on that side. (Imagine a large, curved capital M, and you've got the idea.) Most of the tuners for the right and left necks are on top of the headstock curve, but each of those necks also has a tuner on each side of the headstock right above the nut. If I had to number the tuners like I normally do when I talk about a Les Paul's 3/3 headstock or whatever, this one would be a 1/5/1-3/3-1/6/1.

The 2674 was $950 in 1976 money, the 2675 was $925 in 1976 money, and the 2676 was $1195 in 1978 money. They were all part of the Artist series, so that's why they were so expensive. Their regular Les Paul copy (2351) was only around $300 in 1976 money.

Ibanez 2674, 2675, and 2676
The Ibanez 2674, 2675, and 2676 are all fancy Les Paul copies from the 1970s. I didn't know which one I wanted to post, so I picked all three. They all have the same basic Les Paul setup, with a single-cutaway body, two humbuckers, a volume knob and a tone knob for each pickup, and a 3-way switch. They also have what appears to be a coil tap switch. The most striking thing about each one is the fancy inlay work that covers the body. It's the same for each guitar, with a large flower behind the bridge and flowering vines that start at the knobs and follow the contour of the body all the way to the pickup switch.

This is the 2674. It's black and has two uncovered pickups. A vine inlay runs all the way to the fretboard and onto the carved 3/3 headstock. This is the 2675. It's got a sunburst finish, one covered humbucker to go with the uncovered one, a fancy pickguard with a curl at the end, intricate fretboard inlays, and a 3/3 headstock shaped like one you'd see on a mandolin. This is the 2676. It's red and has gold hardware, two covered pickups, block inlays, and a 3/3 headstock that's closer to what you'd see on later Ibanez guitars.

Yamaha SB-70 bass
The Yamaha SB-70 is the top-of-the-line bass that Yamaha had in the early 1970s. It's got a single-cutaway body style reminiscent of a Les Paul, but with a really deep cutaway and a German carve around the edge of the body that's accented with white binding. It's got two pickups, and each one has its own volume control. There's also a master tone control. The 20-fret neck has chevron-shaped inlays and is topped by a 2/2 headstock.

ESP custom
I've posted some wild custom guitars that ESP has made before, most recently the angel-inspired ones they made for The Alfee's guitarist Toshihiko Takamizawa. This one's a little simpler than those, but no less weird.

This guitar was made for Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, back in the little blip of the 80s before he signed a deal with Jackson. It's a fairly normal black super-Strat guitar, with a humbucker that's controlled by just a volume knob. The weirdness starts with the inlay work. There's a large, yellow NY Yankees logo inlaid behind the hardtail bridge, and the word NOT is inlaid on the neck between the 12th fret and the end of the fretboard with large white capital letters. The inlay takes the place of the frets in that area. (The large block inlay on the 12th fret is just that, and not meant to be a capital I.)

I don't think the switch is a coil tap, because the single-neck guitars have the same pickup, but no switches. The pickups are original, though. You can see them if you zoom in on this catalog page:

I might be wrong about what I said the switches do in the alt text, but I can't find any info on this guitar anywhere that isn't from auction listings, so I took a guess. One might be a 3-way pickup switch and one might be a 3-way amp switch. I dunno.

Pignose PGG-TWIN
I found this Pignose PGG-TWIN in the same catalog I found yesterday's guitar in, and I thought it was too good not to post right away.

You might know Pignose from their small travel amps. Frank Zappa had one that he heavily modified and took everywhere, for example. What you may not know is they also made travel guitars in the late 90s and early 00s that were kinda a competitor to the Fernandes Nomad line. The normal guitar was a single-cutaway design, but I've also seen one shaped like a Flying V. The PGG-TWIN is the weirdest one of the bunch, though.

It's a 12/6 doubleneck guitar, and each neck is set up the same way: a hot rails-style pickup jammed next to the bridge and a speaker for a built-in amp. (Yes, this guitar has two amps. No, I don't know why.) There's a volume knob that's also a push/pull power button and a toggle switch for each amp. You can even have both amps on at the same time if you want. Each neck has 22 frets. The top one has a 6/6 headstock, and the bottom one is a 3/3.There's a label between the Strat-style hardtail bridges that shows you how to use the volume knob. It reads:

Power & Volume Knob
Pull: Power-on
Push: Power-off
Full Volume -> Feedback!

ESP THE ALFEE Signature Angel Classic Junior
I've posted a few guitars that ESP made for The Alfee's guitarist Toshihiko Takamizawa (Takamiy), and here's another one. This one is the most normal of the bunch, which is saying something.

The ESP THE ALFEE Signature Angel Classic Junior has a shape that's inspired by a Les Paul, but has went through some rather creative surgery. It's got an asymmetrical waistline, and the cutaway horn has been moved all the way back to where your leg would rest if you played this sitting down. The body also has The Alfee inlaid on it, as well as one of Takamiy's other angel-inspired guitars, making this the only instance I can think of where a guitar's inlaid onto a totally different one.

This guitar's got two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob and a 3-way switch. It's also got a Floyd Rose trem. The neck has angel inlays and is topped by a curly 4/2 headstock. (Ignore the black things on either side of the headstock; those are from a guitar stand.)

Peter Cook Axe bass
Here's a picture that Baron Wolman took when the Who played the Cow Palace in San Francisco on 11/18/67. In it, John Entwistle is singing and playing a bass guitar that started life as a Fender Jazz, but has been heavily modified by luthier Peter Cook. The body is really narrow where it joins up to the neck, then flares out to a rounded triangle shape for John to rest his arm on at the top and a hook-shaped area at the bottom. The neck, bridge, and pickup are from a Fender Jazz bass, but the knobs (one volume and one tone) don't look particularly Fender-ish.

John also had a version of this bass (called the Axe) that was based on a Gibson Thunderbird.

Donner Hush X
The Donner Hush X is a headless electric guitar designed for traveling. Its body is kinda shaped like a Steinberger, but it's got a removable frame around the edge of the body that gives it the shape of a regular electric. It's got a humbucker and a single-coil, and they're controlled by a concentric volume/tone knob and a 3-way switch. Since this is a headless guitar, the tuners are integrated into the bridge.
