Borghino BB1
The Borghino BB1 is a beautiful archtop classical guitar with a single cutaway and two F-holes. It's got a GraphTech Ghost pickup system that's controlled by three concentric knobs. One controls the volume for the piezo output and MIDI output, one is a bass and treble control, and the third is a mid and mid sweep control. In addition to the regular 1/4" jack, there's a 13-pin MIDI output. The fretboard ends in a wave, and the neck is topped by a slotted 3/3 headstock that also ends in a wave..

Put strings and hardware on this thing since I’m not going to spray final clear this year because I put it off too long again. Oh god does it need fretwork, but it sounds killer and the death bucker is awesome. It looks very homemade but it’s probably never leaving home, so, y’know. Tuned to A
A blue baritone with a cocobolo neck and open square inlay. It has one black pickup, black sperzel tuners, a big chrome topped knob and a dramatic single cutaway and binding A close view of the carve on the body and the binding.

HS Anderson HS-ARS
It's been a while since I posted a pre-Steinberger headless, so here's one that I've only been able to find in catalogs. The HS Anderson HS-ARS is an electric guitar with a symmetrical body. Instead of having two cutaway horns that point towards the headstock, this guitar has two horns that flare outwards. It's got two mini-humbuckers that are controlled by one volume knob, two tone knobs, and a 3-way switch. The tuners are fanned out at the end of the body, behind the bridge. There is a vestigial headstock, but there's nothing there besides the truss rod cover and tailpiece where the strings are inserted.

This picture is from an HS Anderson catalog that was released in the mid 70s. The picture of the guitar is in black and white and flanked by two paragraphs of Japanese text, as well as a label that says HS-ARS to the right of the guitar. The text below the guitar gives the specs. I'll post the text that's below the label in the next picture. Here's a translated version of the Japanese text I mentioned in the first picture. It reads:

The ARS, which fulfills the dream of many guitar players --reverse tuning-- is a guitar that represents the culmination of Anderson'a research, for which he holds numerous patents. It's not simply a matter of moving the tuning pegs to the body; it's a magnificent form crafted based on acoustics and playability.

Jon Kammerer Pegasus
The Jon Kammerer Pegasus is an acoustic guitar that was designed to reduce feedback when it's plugged in via the LR Baggs piezo in the bridge. It's got a double-cutaway body shape, and the top and bottom of the guitar have been CNC routed and contoured. Instead of having a central soundhole, there's a hole on either side of the strings that starts around the cutaway and extends all the way down the body. They end at the end of the body, roughly in line with the bridge. These long soundholes keep low frequencies from resonating and causing feedback. The neck has 24 frets, but it looks like somebody's taken a nibble off the end of the bass side. It's topped by a very narrow 3/3 headstock.

Serracini custom
I found a modern guitar that's a nice counterpart to the one I posted yesterday. Hold on tight, because this thing is weird.

Here's Italian guitarist Luca Stricagnoli holding a triple-neck acoustic guitar that was made for him by fellow Italian Davide Serracini.

The top neck has 6 strings and can be tuned like a normal guitar, but Luca has it tuned to an open tuning that I haven't been able to find out.
The middle (soprano) neck has 7 treble strings that are tuned to a major scale, but without the 7th note.

The third (bass) neck has a fretboard that extends all the way down to where the bridge is on the middle neck. It has three strings that are tuned high to low, and it's only fretted on 2/3rds of the length. The best way I can describe it is to imagine taking a right-handed Steinberger bass and attaching it to a right-handed acoustic guitar so the fretboard of the bass is under the bridge of the acoustic and the body hangs off the end.

I dunno how anybody comes up with this stuff, but this account wouldn't exist if they didn't.

Chevrier Harpo-lyre
This harpo-lyre was probably built by French luthier André Augustin Chevrier around 1830. It's got a round body and has three necks. If you look at the guitar with the necks pointing up and the body pointing down like it is in this picture, the left neck has seven strings and is tuned chromatically (A-B flat-B-c-d flat-d-e flat). The middle neck has six strings and is tuned like a normal guitar. The right neck has eight strings and is tuned diatonically (c'-d'-e'-f'-g'-a'-b'-c2). Each neck has its own small soundhole, the bridge is one long mustache-shaped piece, and the headstock is one of the wildest things I've ever seen. It comes out of the center neck and branches off into two curves. Each curve terminates where it meets the neck on that side. (Imagine a large, curved capital M, and you've got the idea.) Most of the tuners for the right and left necks are on top of the headstock curve, but each of those necks also has a tuner on each side of the headstock right above the nut. If I had to number the tuners like I normally do when I talk about a Les Paul's 3/3 headstock or whatever, this one would be a 1/5/1-3/3-1/6/1.

Ibanez 2674, 2675, and 2676
The Ibanez 2674, 2675, and 2676 are all fancy Les Paul copies from the 1970s. I didn't know which one I wanted to post, so I picked all three. They all have the same basic Les Paul setup, with a single-cutaway body, two humbuckers, a volume knob and a tone knob for each pickup, and a 3-way switch. They also have what appears to be a coil tap switch. The most striking thing about each one is the fancy inlay work that covers the body. It's the same for each guitar, with a large flower behind the bridge and flowering vines that start at the knobs and follow the contour of the body all the way to the pickup switch.

This is the 2674. It's black and has two uncovered pickups. A vine inlay runs all the way to the fretboard and onto the carved 3/3 headstock. This is the 2675. It's got a sunburst finish, one covered humbucker to go with the uncovered one, a fancy pickguard with a curl at the end, intricate fretboard inlays, and a 3/3 headstock shaped like one you'd see on a mandolin. This is the 2676. It's red and has gold hardware, two covered pickups, block inlays, and a 3/3 headstock that's closer to what you'd see on later Ibanez guitars.

Yamaha SB-70 bass
The Yamaha SB-70 is the top-of-the-line bass that Yamaha had in the early 1970s. It's got a single-cutaway body style reminiscent of a Les Paul, but with a really deep cutaway and a German carve around the edge of the body that's accented with white binding. It's got two pickups, and each one has its own volume control. There's also a master tone control. The 20-fret neck has chevron-shaped inlays and is topped by a 2/2 headstock.

ESP custom
I've posted some wild custom guitars that ESP has made before, most recently the angel-inspired ones they made for The Alfee's guitarist Toshihiko Takamizawa. This one's a little simpler than those, but no less weird.

This guitar was made for Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, back in the little blip of the 80s before he signed a deal with Jackson. It's a fairly normal black super-Strat guitar, with a humbucker that's controlled by just a volume knob. The weirdness starts with the inlay work. There's a large, yellow NY Yankees logo inlaid behind the hardtail bridge, and the word NOT is inlaid on the neck between the 12th fret and the end of the fretboard with large white capital letters. The inlay takes the place of the frets in that area. (The large block inlay on the 12th fret is just that, and not meant to be a capital I.)

Pignose PGG-TWIN
I found this Pignose PGG-TWIN in the same catalog I found yesterday's guitar in, and I thought it was too good not to post right away.

You might know Pignose from their small travel amps. Frank Zappa had one that he heavily modified and took everywhere, for example. What you may not know is they also made travel guitars in the late 90s and early 00s that were kinda a competitor to the Fernandes Nomad line. The normal guitar was a single-cutaway design, but I've also seen one shaped like a Flying V. The PGG-TWIN is the weirdest one of the bunch, though.

It's a 12/6 doubleneck guitar, and each neck is set up the same way: a hot rails-style pickup jammed next to the bridge and a speaker for a built-in amp. (Yes, this guitar has two amps. No, I don't know why.) There's a volume knob that's also a push/pull power button and a toggle switch for each amp. You can even have both amps on at the same time if you want. Each neck has 22 frets. The top one has a 6/6 headstock, and the bottom one is a 3/3.There's a label between the Strat-style hardtail bridges that shows you how to use the volume knob. It reads:

Power & Volume Knob
Pull: Power-on
Push: Power-off
Full Volume -> Feedback!

ESP THE ALFEE Signature Angel Classic Junior
I've posted a few guitars that ESP made for The Alfee's guitarist Toshihiko Takamizawa (Takamiy), and here's another one. This one is the most normal of the bunch, which is saying something.

The ESP THE ALFEE Signature Angel Classic Junior has a shape that's inspired by a Les Paul, but has went through some rather creative surgery. It's got an asymmetrical waistline, and the cutaway horn has been moved all the way back to where your leg would rest if you played this sitting down. The body also has The Alfee inlaid on it, as well as one of Takamiy's other angel-inspired guitars, making this the only instance I can think of where a guitar's inlaid onto a totally different one.

This guitar's got two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob and a 3-way switch. It's also got a Floyd Rose trem. The neck has angel inlays and is topped by a curly 4/2 headstock. (Ignore the black things on either side of the headstock; those are from a guitar stand.)

Peter Cook Axe bass
Here's a picture that Baron Wolman took when the Who played the Cow Palace in San Francisco on 11/18/67. In it, John Entwistle is singing and playing a bass guitar that started life as a Fender Jazz, but has been heavily modified by luthier Peter Cook. The body is really narrow where it joins up to the neck, then flares out to a rounded triangle shape for John to rest his arm on at the top and a hook-shaped area at the bottom. The neck, bridge, and pickup are from a Fender Jazz bass, but the knobs (one volume and one tone) don't look particularly Fender-ish.

John also had a version of this bass (called the Axe) that was based on a Gibson Thunderbird.

Donner Hush X
The Donner Hush X is a headless electric guitar designed for traveling. Its body is kinda shaped like a Steinberger, but it's got a removable frame around the edge of the body that gives it the shape of a regular electric. It's got a humbucker and a single-coil, and they're controlled by a concentric volume/tone knob and a 3-way switch. Since this is a headless guitar, the tuners are integrated into the bridge.

Eastwood "Be Stiff" bass
Eastwood has made versions of a lot of DEVO's more famous guitars, like the LaBaye 2x4, Ibanez Cloud, and "Whip It" Les Paul. They also made this: the "Be Stiff" bass.

The original bass probably started as a Gibson EB of some sort, but the body's been cut down dramatically. If you flip the bass upside down so the neck is pointing at the ground, the body looks like a mushroom, with a large oval top and thin shaft where the neck bolts up. It's got two pickups that are controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. Eastwood topped the 2/2 headstock with an Energy Dome and the DEVO logo.

The bass in the picture is a right-handed model, but a lefty version was also available.

Washburn WV40 Vindicator
The Washburn WV40 Vindicator is an asymmetrical Flying V-style electric guitar. The top part of the V is longer and thicker than the bottom, and it's also curved. The guitar has two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. The 24-fret neck has compass-shaped fret inlays and is topped by a reversed 6-in-line headstock. My favorite part is the pinstriping that follows the outline of the body.

Line6 Variax 700 Acoustic
The Line6 Variax 700 Acoustic looks like a fairly normal thinline acoustic guitar. It's got a deep cutaway and the fretboard extends into the soundhole, giving you access to the higher notes on the treble strings. If you just look at the front of the guitar, the only real clue that this isn't a normal acoustic is the 6 individual piezo pickups in the bridge. The controls for the Variax electronics are on top of the body. There's a model selector knob and three sliders. In the regular mode, the sliders control the virtual mic position, volume, and a compressor. If you double-tap the knob, however, that puts the guitar into alternate tuning mode. You can use the sliders to pick preset tunings, or even create your own. There are two output jacks: a normal 1/4" output and a special Variax cable that's basically an RJ45 cable with a special connector that'll lock it in place. This will take care of sound output and power for the guitar if you've got the right breakout box.

JD Guitars T-12
The JD Guitars T-12 is a 12-string version of a thinline Telecaster, with a single-cutaway semi-hollow body that's got one F-hole. It's stained red at the end of the body and fades to yellow the closer you get to the neck, giving it a "tequila sunrise" finish that's only covered by a small S-shaped pickguard that barely reaches to the bridge plate. There's a DiMarzio hot rail-style humbucker (maybe a Fast Track T? not sure) in the bridge, and a normal single-coil in the neck. They're controlled by a volume knob, two tone knobs, and a 3-way switch. The 6/6 headstock is finished the same way as the body.

The Kay K900G is a semi-hollow electric guitar with a symmetrical double-cutaway body shape, a narrow waist, pointy horns, and one F-hole. It's got two single-coil pickups, and each one has its own volume control and on-off switch. There's also a master tone control and a 3-way rhythm/bass/solo switch. The weird thing about the controls is all of them are sliders except for that one switch. The guitar also has a Bigsby-style trem, block inlays, and a 3/3 headstock with a full-width string retainer right above the nut.

It's got two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. The T on the model number stands for "tremolo". The neck has large "kumogara" block inlays and a 3/3 headstock.

It's got a humbucker in the bridge that's controlled by a volume knob, a 24-fret neck, and a 3/3 headstock that's just as pointy as the rest of the body.

Gibson Ultratone 6
This stunning instrument is a Gibson Ultratone 6 lap steel guitar. The top of the body (closest to you when it's on your lap) gently widens out from the nut, and the silver fretboard follows this widening. It looks to me like a pool of liquid mercury with some gems set in it for position markers. The bottom of the body (farthest from you) also widens out around the 14th fret and gives troom for the controls. The bridge and P-90 pickup are covered by a large red cover with the Ultratone logo on it. The P-90 is controlled by a volume knob and two tone knobs. From what I've been able to find, the middle tone knob acts more like a presence knob. The 3/3 headstock also has a cover on it so you can't see the shafts of the tuners.

Fender Rhinestone Stratocaster prototype
In 1975, Ivor Arbiter (the UK's Fender distributor at the time) asked sculptor Jon Douglas to make "a non-boring Strat". Now, if you look at just the hardware specs, this is basically the same as any other Strat that came out of the factory in 1975 (three single coils, one volume and two tone controls, 5-way blade switch, maple neck with rosewood fretboard and big 70s headstock). The body is a whole different story, though.

The body of this Strat is made out of a fiberglass core that's been covered in cold cast bronze. Feathery curls stand out from the body, with the longest one running from the bridge all the way down the top horn. The guitar has also been studded with white rhinestones, giving it its name.

Six guitars were made in this original run, but only two survived a fire at the Fender store where they were located. Another 50 were scheduled to be made in the 1980s, but Douglas died halfway through the run.

Azor electric
I don't know too much about this guitar, but it looks too good not to talk about. Judging by the name on the pickups, it was made by Azor. It's a hollowbody electric with a single cutaway and a curve cut out of the end of the body. It kinda reminds me of an Ovation Viper, but with a deeper cutaway. It's got two single-coil pickups, and each one has its own volume and tone control. There's also a 3-way switch in the lower horn. The tailpiece follows the curve in the end of the body. The black plastic (!) fretboard has large dot inlays, and the neck is topped with a 3/3 headstock.

Le Breton custom doubleneck
Here's a live shot of Khn from Angine de Poitrine playing a doubleneck guitar that Canadian luthier Raphael La Breton built for him. It's basically a Stratocaster and a Precision bass that have been spliced together. The Strat half has the normal three single-coil setup, replacing three blade-style pickups that were part of the original build. They're controlled by a volume knob, two tone knobs, and a 5-way blade switch. There are also two on/off switches that were probably coil taps for the original pickups. The top tone knob has been replaced by a die. The Precision half has the normal setup (split-coil pickup, one volume and one tone knob), but the knobs have been replaced by dice and the pickguard is covered in black tape to hide the original black & white tortoiseshell pickguard. Each neck is microtonal up to the 12th fret; that is, each normal fret has a half-tone fret between it and the fret for the next whole tone. The Strat neck has a 3/3 headstock, and the Precision neck has a 2/2 headstock. Here's something else I noticed about this guitar when I watched their performance on Jools Holland's show: red and green fret markers on the top of the frets! I'm not sure where they start because this screenshot I took has the headstock cut off, but you can see how they basically alternate red / blank / green / blank all the way down the neck.

Gower Guitars was based out of Nashville, and they made many guitars for country musicians, like this one for session guitarist Fate Vanderpool. (You can tell it was his because the pickguard has FATE inlaid in it with abalone capital letters.) It's got a single-cutaway shape, and the top horn is long and curved inwards like an old F-style mandolin. It's got a humbucker-style pickup in the bridge and a single-coil in the neck, and they're controlled by a volume knob in the lower horn, two tone knobs (one for each pickup), and a 3-way switch. (One of the tone knobs is missing in this picture. It would be to the left of the white knob, above the switch.) The guitar also has thick abalone binding around the edge of the body, a Bigsby trem, large abalone block inlays, and a mandolin-inspired 3/3 headstock.

Ibanez EHB-600 bass
The Ibanez EHB-600 bass is a new, headless model. Its body has a long upper horn and a deep lower cutaway. It's got two pickups, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a balance knob, a mid boost/cut knob, a concentric bass boost/cut / treble boost/cut knob, and a switch that turns the EQ on or off. When the switch is off, the treble knob functions as a passive tone knob.

Robin Ranger
The Robin Ranger is a semi-hollow electric guitar with many Fender design cues. It's got a Strat-type shape with an F-hole like a Telecaster Thinline. The pearloid pickguard only covers the neck side of the body like an original Precision bass. It's got two single-coils in the bridge & middle positions and a humbucker in the neck, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 5-way blade switch.

Charlston acoustic
This Charlton acoustic was made in Texas around 1940. It's got a symmetrical double-cutaway body that's reminiscent of a Danelectro. The bridge is angled in the opposite direction from the harp tailpiece. There's a large pickguard below the neck, and the end of the fretboard stair-steps past the 15th fret. I like the little curl at the end of the 3/3 split headstock.

You might be wondering where the soundhole is. It's in the next picture. This is the back of the Charlston acoustic. The soundhole is actually a half-circle that takes up the whole end of the guitar. It's made up of two quarter-circles, and slats fan out from the point of the quarter-circle to the curve. I think it's one of the prettiest things I've posted on here in a while.

Fender Voyager prototype
The Fender Meteora is an offset electric guitar with a double-cutaway body. Before they went into production, two prototypes were made using the model name Voyager. One of them was set up in full Telecaster mode, with a blonde finish, two single-coils, and a 3-saddle Tele bridge. The one in the picture, however, is meat to be more futuristic. Its two pickups are hidden under the large metallic pickguard, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. Its tremolo and headstock are both Strat-style. I like the red letter F on the pickguard.

Vox Starstream XII
The Vox Starstream XII is a teardrop-shaped hollowbody guitar with a curved soundhole on the top of the body. It's got two single-coil pickups, and they're controlled by a volume knob for each pickup, a master tone, and a 3-way switch.

...oh, and there are a few other doodads thrown in too. Hold on tight, because it's gonna get weird.

Those of you that have seen the other Vox guitars I've posted know that their 60s models were loaded with built-in effects, and this one's no different. There's a switch & knob for a treble/bass booster, a switch & knob for a distortion circuit, and a switch & knob for a repeater circuit along the bottom of the body. There's also a switch above the neck pickup that triggers a built-in E note so you have something to tune to.

The weirdest thing about this guitar is definitely the wah-wah pedal. Flip a switch above the bridge pickup, and you can rock the triangular thing sticking up out of the bridge back and forth with your palm.

The headstock is Vox's normal ovoid triangle shape, but they've put 6 tuners on both sides of it.

Parker PAB40 Tomahawk bass
The Parker PAB40 Tomahawk is an acoustic bass from the same company that made the Parker Fly. It's a single-cutaway design with a pointy horn and another weird point coming off the top of the body, close to the waist. Instead of having a regular soundhole or F-holes, it's got a series of concentric arches that get bigger the closer they get to the edge of the body. The extra point on the body makes a little room for the biggest arch, and the higher frets on the fretboard are stair-stepped to make room for the arches as well. There's a piezo pickup installed into the asymmetrical bridge, and it's controlled by a Fishman preamp.

Eagle B.B. Stone
The Eagle B.B. Stone is a rectangle-shaped electric guitar with double cutaways and very pointy horns. It's got two humbuckers, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way switch. The neck has block inlays, and there's a big hole in the middle of the 3/3 split headstock. The tuners are installed so that the shafts are inside the hole and the keys point down, kinda like the slotted headstock you'd see on a classical guitar.
