Finally, I really feel for my students. The OU courses at Dundee provided people with working commitments and disabilities an alternate pathway into Higher Education. I had a similar path into HE, starting at foundational courses after flunking my Highers. Those paths are increasingly disappearing.

Well, that’s that. After a mere three years in UK HE, I’ve finally lost my last job - a casual zero hours (and for the last year) contract-less job working at the University of Dundee providing OU online courses. I’d like to say I’m surprised but the writing has been on the wall for some time #17thc

The peerless Galt authored Ringan Gilhaize which features the lives of three Scottish Protestants from the Reformation to the Revolution. The concluding chapters take place during the Highland War (1689-1691) and features the Battle of Killiecrankie as its climax. A phenomenal historical novel!

Been a busy month thus far, working away on another chapter and the usual marking but also secured two job interviews for the end of the month (outwith academia) and been working on a really exciting postdoc fellowship application. It’s on the diaspora and got some big Scots-Dutch elements, so 🤞

Academic freedom is a sacrosanct element of democracy. This is not the first time universities and academics have been attacked by the right. JD Vance famously described universities as ‘the enemy’. It is not for the government to proscribe what academics and students can say! chng.it/86MvZhZYHd

Dipping back again a bit into M&B Bannerlord and it's striking to me how the simplifications it makes (many shared with the Total War series) distort pre-gunpowder tactics and the uses of units. 1/

Hugh Mackay underlines the value of experienced officers and soldiers, like James, in his memoir. He notes his brother ‘was killed upon the spot with severals of the old souldiers pickmen, who stood by him after the shot had run away’. Killiecrankie was a defeat because inexperienced soldiers fled.

James Mackay became Lieutenant-Colonel of his brother’s regiment of the Scots-Dutch Brigade. He was killed fighting as part of that regiment (the 1st) against the Jacobites during the Highland War at the Battle of Killiecrankie, 27th July 1689. #Skystorians #earlymodern #17thc #JacobiteStudies

His younger brother James enlisted directly in the military of Francesco Morosini, Doge of Venice. Probably around the same time or just after the end of the siege. He seems to have served well before joining his brother in the Dutch Republic in 1678. #Skystorians #earlymodern #17thc

At the end of the Siege, Mackay returned to France and to his regiment. He served in the first half of the Franco-Dutch War against the Dutch. By 1674, he transfers his commission as a captain to the Scots-Dutch Brigade. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General. #Skystorians #earlymodern #17thc

Mackay and his fellow officers were dispatched as part of a 1669 French expedition under the command of François de Vendôme, duc de Beaufort. Mackay would later write an account of the siege in French - modelled on Julius Caesar’s Conquest of Gaul. #Skystorians #earlymodern #17thc

Hugh Mackay (the eldest of the two) went first in 1660. He joined the Scots Regiment de Douglas in France but he first saw action as part of a group of French volunteers serving Venice during the latter half of the Cretan War (1645-1669). #earlymodern #17thc

Another lesser known link is through the Mackays of Scourie and, namely, two brothers - Hugh and James. The third and fourth male siblings of the family went the way of many unlikely to gain land or title (due to primogeniture), they sought military employment in Europe. #earlymodern #17thc

Scottish martial migration to Italy had a long, if minor, precedent. Following the Restoration, religious differences do seem to have deterred the majority of Scots soldiers from serving Italian powers, like Venice. Although by the 1640s we have figures like Sir James Scott #earlymodern #17thc
