20 September 1820: on a visit to Lyme Regis, Cambridge geologist Adam Sedgwick notes in his journal 'After breakfast purchase fossils of Miss Anning', perhaps the earliest mention of Mary Anning junior running the family fossil shop. He spent £3 2s on 'various fossils' and 'part of Ichthyosaurus'.
Top left, portrait of Mary Anning in a green cloak and a straw bonnet tied with a red ribbon; top right, portrait of Adam Sedgwick with dark hair and in a dark coat; bottom, extract from Sedgwick's diary '20 [September 1820] After breakfast purchase fossils of Miss Anning - was to Charmouth Cliffs - large flags of lias covered with impressions of ammonites'.

14 September 1825: geologists Roderick and Charlotte Murchison visit Lyme Regis and meet Mary Anning. They called first at the shop, but Mary was out fossil hunting in the rain. Roderick (and maybe Charlotte) found her, 'a fine intelligent young woman' on the beach 'with her dog, hammer & basket'.
Top, extract from Murchison's journal 'Charmouth Sept 14 1825 To day to Lyme & sat in the Plesiosaurus Bed with Mary Anning – a drenching rain'; centre left, portrait of Mary Anning in a green cloak and straw bonnet tied with a red ribbon; centre right, portrait of Roderick Murchison with a full head of hair and long sideburns; bottom, extract from Murchison's journal where he went to the 'Western Beach where I soon discovered her [Mary Anning] with her dog, hammer & basket – a fine intelligent young woman'

If you visit Winchester Castle, you'll see this round table hanging in its Great Hall. The decor, depicting King Arthur and the names of his knights, was done by order of Henry VIII (note the Tudor rose); but the table itself has been dated to 1250-1280. So, is this the Round Table? Yes and no. 🧵🔽

The Painted Chamber in the Palace at Westminster was regarded as one of the marvels of medieval Europe because of its magnificent decoration. Historians have debated whether this work was carried out between 1263 & 1272 under the patronage of Henry III, or later between 1292 & 1297 under Edward I.

These fragments of painted panelling (c.1515) were once part of a large frieze, depicting Saxon kings. An inscription on the panel of Athelstan makes it clear that the subject is the unification in AD 926/7 of the lesser kingdoms of Britain under Athelstan (reigning AD 925–40).

Fellows are elected to this position by the Society in recognition of their work for the historical discipline and profession. There are many different routes to Fellowship, just as there are different kinds of contributions and careers within the discipline of history. Today’s RHS Fellows are history practitioners from a very wide range of backgrounds (within and beyond higher education) who have contributed to historical understanding and knowledge through a body of work. These contributions take many forms: from academic publications of different formats, to editorial and curatorial work, history programming and public history. FANTASTIC NEWS! The 2,500 year-old gold Coțofenești Helmet from Romania has been recovered! 🤩 Also recovered are two of three ancient gold bracelets, all were stolen in a raid on a Dutch museum more than a year ago. 📷 by me 2021 #Archaeology
My photo shows the ancient Coțofenești Helmet from Romania.

The helmet is made from three welded gold plates, on which complex relief decoration was made by a punching method, consisting of geometric, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic motifs.

The top half of the helmet is covered in a repetitive, evenly spaced, embossed raised pattern of rounded, fan-ridged bumps which give the helmet a studded look. The crown of the helmet is missing.

Over the front opening, at the forehead, are two large almond-shaped eyes, thought to be apotropaic (magical) eyes to ward off evil. They are framed by thick curved lines that sweep outward like dramatic eyebrows, and there is a vertical ridge down the centre between the eyes.

The two cheek guards are decorated in relief with a human figure holding a dagger, sacrificing a kneeling ram. The right cheek guard design is partially seen in my photo. The neck guard (not seen in my photo) is decorated on two registers: on the upper part are four sphinxes, and on the lower part three griffins with a leg of an herbivorous animal in their muzzles.

The helmet was discovered in the village of Poiana Coțofenești, Prahova County, Romania, in the late 1920s. Experts date the helmet to the mid-5th century BC.

I saw the helmet on display in the temporary exhibition ‘Archaeological Treasures of Romania’ at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid in 2021. It was on loan from the National Museum of Romanian History in Bucharest.
