Dust outbreak over the Red Sea. This is a classic winter Shamal signature: northerly–northwesterly flow lofts desert #dust from western #Arabia, spreads it over the #RedSea, then advects it southward. The curved plume reflects flow channeling, frictional effects, and mesoscale wind shear over water.

This plume isn’t just local pollution: it shows regional transport. Winter boundary-layer collapse + high humidity favor secondary aerosol formation (sulfates/nitrates). Eastern outflow toward the Bay of Bengal confirms multi-day stagnation, not a single emission spike. #AirQuality 📅 2025 Dec 16-17

A glory from space! A contrast enhanced image taken by earth observation satellite #Terra on 24 November 2025 shows one clearly. The border region of Namibia and Angola is at upper right. A glory is round, but not in this case. More on this in the alt-text.
The image shows an elongated shape coloured like a rainbow on clouds over the ocean west of Namibia and Angola, which are visible as a brown area at top right. A satellite like Terra scans the earth below as it flies over, each scan added to build up the image. A glory can be visible from airplanes when they fly over stratus clouds and have the sun directly behind the observer. A typical glory looks like a circle of coloured bands with the shadow of the airplane in the centre. Satellites are too far away of course to have their shadow be discernible. As the satellite moves, from top to bottom in this image, the position of the sun changes relative to the satellite and so does the visiblity and the size of the glory beneath the satelllite. This causes the glory to become oval in shape.

In Afar’s semi-desert grasslands, ash fallout is smothering sparse vegetation and is contaminating grazing areas, while also adding minerals that can slowly enrich the soil. It creates short-term stress but leaves potential long-term benefits.🌋🌬🌿
