Hey #rhetoric #composition #fyc ppl: I just learned that there's another version of the rhetorical triangle: speaker-audience-message,& I am confused & curious. Teaching comp a long time but never seen this. Is this other one actually a thing, or did someone take logos-ethos-pathos and just rewrite?

more conversations, more collaboration—in general, there seemed to be more trust that we were all working toward the same goals, each a bit differently, trying to grow the tent on common ground. Now, I’m not so sure, and I’m afraid the NCTE lit the tent on fire.

In my latest "Bad Ideas About Teaching" column, "Don't Talk About Failure," I write about how we can help *very resistant* students understand how important failure is to learning and to staying motivated for learning. Link in comments, and PDF available upon request.

Image of text which says: I try to establish that failure is a necessary part of the writing process — I do so through repetition, readings which support that thesis, and sometimes my own writing failures. I know professors from all kinds of classes who do this as well — they talk about failed lab experiments, equations that never worked, the language phrases which result in unexpected food orders, and theories which never apply. The main idea is to get students to see failure not as a cost, but as a benefit.

One of the most resonant activities in my writing classes centers, transparently & forcefully, definitions of parts of the writing process. It’s powerful because many FYS don’t know the difference between editing and revising, for ex, or why free writing is beneficial. I’m grateful for this thread.

Now many times are we gonna have to dance this dance before these people learn the goddam steps. "AI" reproduces, exacerbates, and iterates the biases and values it was trained on. Those biases and values are, largely, very bad. There for the reproductions will most often be as bad and worse. Jfc.
