I'm co-facilitating a learning community this year & one of the profs off-handedly mentioned how they've tried to make their course as tech-free as possible. Which is not a new idea, but it's interesting because of WHO said it. It wasn't someone who never learned tech tools in the 1st place ...

Y'all, we need to work harder on including salary ranges in job posts. And if you think there's a policy preventing that, ask questions of both HR & Finance to make sure that's really, really true. We used to not post them & now we do because questions were asked. (And no, I'm not on the hunt. 😁)

Reminder that the Gmail Snooze button is a handy tool this time of year. Some things are getting snoozed till December 16 for a deep work retreat but a lot are snoozing till January. I used to keep things in the inbox till handled, but switching to snooze has been a great anxiety management tool!

Tonight at the ARC bar, #POD24 friends! It's just a fun, clique-averse get-together to hang out and see each other. I'm just a bit too scattered to do all the PR for it. All are welcome!

Alright goofballs, here’s the POD Conference day 1 fit. Come find me! Even if we don’t know each other in real life! We can hug if you want! We are maximizing dopamine right now to prepare for whatever comes next in the fight.

Hi #POD24 friends. Are you maybe a little tired this week (month..year..years) like I am? If so, join me in making conference decisions that are about your joy/peace/other personally-meaningful noun. This is not a time to “get your money’s worth.” Whatever comes next needs us rested and grounded.

So, I made it through the beginning of the school year as a new (unplanned) executive director, through a catastrophic hurricane and its lingering effects, and through my last conference directing, all without a migraine. It seems the election was the straw that broke the camel's back, though ...

I get that compliance can be a useful tool in maintaining access so good work can continue. But compliance becomes complicity much faster than we think. And I'm pretty sure no one realizes they've made the switch until it's too late.

I don't care about sportsball but people in my life do, so basketball brackets: engaged! I did one based on the relative sassiness of the mascots (which involved MANY google image searches). And another based on the aesthetics of university homepages (many more searches). Obviously, I will win. 😆

If your job relies on people "buying in" before doing what you want (learning, buying a product, etc), please read The Art of Gathering. This is not a new book nor rec, but I continue to be stunned by the way people start things (Zooms, classes) in ways that ignore this wisdom. (🫠 in a webinar)

Today in my Teaching and Student Success Lab (TASSL), my students will be completing an analysis of student evals for an instructor (something we provide by request). But of course I'm not going to let this opportunity to cause good trouble go to waste. 😈
1.How many classes are we evaluating? How many students are in each class? What % of the students in each class completed the evaluations? Does this information have any implications for how we interpret the results?
2. Is this course better than, worse than, or the same as other courses? What data are you using to draw this conclusion? Should this type of conclusion be drawn from these data?
3. Is this instructor better than, worse than, or the same as other courses? What data are you using to draw this conclusion? Should this type of conclusion be drawn from these data?
4. Based only on the quantitative data, what are some strengths of this instructor?
5. Based only on the quantitative data, what are some opportunities for growth for this instructor?
6. Based on what you’ve seen here so far, are student evaluations a valid and reliable tool for assessing teaching quality? Why or why not?

If you saw a list of faculty/ed development offerings and one of the sections on that list was "Courses" what would you expect those offerings would consist of? And how would those offerings be different from other things on that list? Would a week-long course design institute go there?

Back from the beach & ready for dry January, meaning a sabbatical from alcohol & all social media for at least the next month. If you need me, text, email, or messenger. And maybe don’t expect a speedy response on any of those cause I’m working on turning down the noise and turning up the signal.✌🏻

I will never understand people who dump on “grade grubbing” students. Grade grubbing is a very logical reaction to the very illogical system that students are subjected to.

I am obsessed with students who write in their real voices. Who literally type stuff like "Oops, we are now 2 pages in and I am going to finally address the prompt." It's such a joyful validation of my approach, because they wouldn't be so real if they were afraid I'd penalize them for it.

I know that small group feedback processes can be exhausting, but it really is so fun when I'm able to tie a bunch of disparate student comments together in the moment and I say, "so tell me, is this the main thing?" and the whole class excitedly exhales a "yes!" Like I'm a genius or something. 😆

From the audience at the #POD23 anchor session… the idea of amplifying “relational leadership” AS leadership. That this touchy-feely version of leadership IS rigorous, effective leadership. That right there explains any gap I ever feel between what I do and what the system expects. 😭
