The NCTE decision on the CCCC is all kinds of fuc&ed up, but something I’ve been thinking about is how, over the last decade or so,* it seems that real progress has been made in bridging gaps between k-12 and college teaching, in many disciplines, and esp. so in writing and ELA—

Request: is anyone here a paid subscriber to Tressie McMillan Cottom's Substack "Essaying"? I need to cite an essay from there and can't access it because it's not taking new paid subscribers and is paywalled.

I have deeply enjoyed writing my "Bad Ideas About Teaching" column for the National Teaching and Learning Forum, but this is my last one. I am now focusing on a book project and some other opportunities with my limited writing time.
Image of text which says: What I've most enjoyed about writing the column has been engaging with you, the readers, about these ideas, well as being part of a community of people across the country who want to improve teaching in higher ed and who work incredibly hard every day to move that needle.

In my latest "Bad Ideas About Teaching" column, "Don't Talk About Failure," I write about how we can help *very resistant* students understand how important failure is to learning and to staying motivated for learning. Link in comments, and PDF available upon request.
Image of text which says: I try to establish that failure is a necessary part of the writing process — I do so through repetition, readings which support that thesis, and sometimes my own writing failures. I know professors from all kinds of classes who do this as well — they talk about failed lab experiments, equations that never worked, the language phrases which result in unexpected food orders, and theories which never apply. The main idea is to get students to see failure not as a cost, but as a benefit.

In my latest "Bad Ideas About Teaching" column, "Don't Use The Names Students Want," I write about my struggle to learn names and to speak from the integrity of my "teacher within" to use students' chosen names and speak to the student within. Link in comments, and PDF available upon request.
Image of text which says: This way of learning students' names might seem a small gesture what with everything going on for us, our students, our institutions, and the world. But one of the most important things we can do at the beginning of a semester is set a tone for the communities that we would like our classes to become.

When nuts are done, assemble salad: tear up handful of mint leaves. Sprinkle half the nuts on the greens, then half the oil, and half the mint. Place the burrata in the center and pour the rest of the oil over it, then sprinkle the rest of the nuts & mint. Add more salt to taste.

My latest "Bad Ideas About Teaching" column, "Complain About the Transactional Nature of College," advocates leaning into the transactional nature of college: be transparent/ forceful w students abt the nature of that transaction: transformation & learning. Link in comments; PDF avail w request.
Image of text which says: "lean into the transaction language. SO let's lean into explicit conversations about how they must transform their lives to succeed.

Here is a beautiful and wonderful thing: reading a meditation on flying in an airplane-themed coffee shop. Gorgeous, thoughtful prose by Mark Vanhoenacker.
Image of a paragraph of text which says: “Georgia O’Keefe was afraid of flying but obsessed with the clouds she saw from airplanes, which she painted with an all but religious devotion: ‘When you fly under even normal circumstances, you see such marvelous things, with incredible colors that you actually begin to believe your dreams.’ I try to remember, when I haven’t flown for some time, and the handles of the bags of groceries I’m carrying through a cold and rainy November dusk are about to break, that such a lake of light may be above the clouds that rest on the street.”Image of a book in front of airplane seats and a table made of recycled fuselage Image of a book cover: Skyfaring: A journey with a pilot

may not be learning very effectively, explaining, in some

How do we know when our students have really learned something so well that they'll retain it? It might not be that perfect moment, that immediate reactions of biting into a cookie or a bright spark in a student's eyes during a lesson.
