this is one thing where it's gonna be hard for people doing this by hand to continue to derive meaning from AI is just automatically "solving" problems people have been working on in teams for years in a matter of hours + barging into open source repositories & stealing / "helping" their work

Ukraine’s Exposure Grows as Satellite Use Is Restricted and Russia Escalates
A huge attack cut power to 600,000 people in Kyiv, and a Pentagon-funded satellite internet program appeared to be curbed without warning.

Probably making enemies here but: (1) Journals should not publish scale development or validation papers that don't disclose the actual items or make the scale freely available (2) Anyone who requires payment to some little rent-seeking shop for the use of their scales deserve to be ridiculed

If they’re not including something that the posting asked for, that’s on them, and I can’t imagine fishing for a website to fill it in. If you’re looking for something that isn’t in their materials, that’s on you. I’m still of the position that websites are unnecessary.

Cannot be emphasised enough that Trump II will plausibly cause the kind of death count we associate with the worst dictatorships of the last century. Unspeakably bad that he came to be president of the world's most powerful nation.

I think people tend to underestimate how much the people high up in Anthropic, and other AI companies to various extents, appear to genuinely believe this stuff. Not saying their beliefs are correct, just that they are likely sincerely held.

remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

As a college professor, I hate when people preface their argument with “I’m a college professor” in an attempt to add unwarranted authority to it. I also happen to think writing is important.

Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...
So the message of this research out of China, where you were seeing a lot of kids using A.I. to help them, was that when they were using the A.I., they were getting things done faster. But it turned out that the skills they were learning were not holding, that their actual personal performance, at least in the way we traditionally measure it, was degrading.

What do you think when you hear that?

The last part — I completely agree. Try to get a kid to do long division right now. The multiplication table is starting to be forgotten. Doing square roots, my goodness. Basic math is being forgotten. Does it matter?

That’s my question for you.

Yeah. I don’t think it does. I don’t think it does.

But there must be some set of skills that matter.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But maybe not those. We’re going to discover new ones. Just maybe not those.

There are a lot of skills that don’t matter. My first confession, I actually don’t know my address. And I ——

I don’t really believe that to be true.

It’s completely true. Janine will tell you and Lori will tell you.

One day I had to pump gas — it was a few years ago. They needed my ZIP code, and I panicked. I didn’t know my ZIP code. I don’t know my telephone number. I forget these things. I can live with it.

But let me take the other side because I don’t want to fall into a thing where, because some skills can be safely offloaded ——

Yeah.

I also can’t get anywhere without a mapping system now. Never could, frankly. But I’m a big reader. And one of the skills I really value, one of the capacities I have that I really value is an attention span formed on physical books.

You’re a big reader. I’ve read about the kind of reading you do. And there is, prior to A.I., a lot of concern and noticing among college professors and others that the way people use the internet has probably shortened attention spans.
Some skills can be safely given away. Others are valuable. They are capacities that are needed for that flexibility, for that creative thinking, for that focus. It can’t be the case that everything can be traded off. Some skills can be safely given away. Others are valuable. They are capacities that are needed for that flexibility, for that creative thinking, for that focus. It can’t be the case that everything can be traded off.

Yeah. Well, I think that we’re going to lose some finer intellectual dexterity, but we’re going to be better systems thinkers.

Today’s engineers are far better systems thinkers than I was when I graduated from school. But I was a much better transistor thinker.

What do you mean by systems thinker?

They think of large systems. Today’s computers have trillions, hundreds of trillions of transistors in them. When I first graduated from school, the first chip I worked on had 200 transistors. I knew every one of them by name. No engineer does that today. Most engineers now work well above the transistor, well above the functionality, and they’re cobbling things together to do things.

So you need to think much more about systems and interactions of systems. So some of the lower-level knowledge is gone.

This generation has been rough for the PS5. At least Astro Bot was good, and it plays UHD movies. Otherwise, it wouldn’t offer much my PC couldn’t do. In contrast, I’m quite happy with my Switch 2 and have plenty to look forward to.

Somewhat different answer, but the specific de-centering of animals in Blade Runner is interesting. Animals become a valuable novelty good. Robotic animals are more accessible but still expensive, with the real deal being extremely rare. Not the focus of the film, but a great piece of it.

Dave Conte, responding to JCO mocking the idea that Real Time is "one of the best tv shows": Oh Lord. Out of touch on this one. Obama, Clinton, even Trump all watch his show. It’s not so much Maher himself but the way the show brings Dems and Repubs together to talk/debate intelligently and civilly. Again, 41 Emmy nominations. You should try giving it a watch. You might be surprised.

JCO: yes, I have seen Bill Maher but don't recognize much of what you say here. "talk/debate intelligently & civilly"---really? I must have missed this.
his entire attitude toward "woke" is superficial, predicable, & unexamined; he seems scarcely to comprehend out of what extremities & desperation "woke" arose initially, & confuses the annoying pieties & cringe-worthy foolishness of peak woke with the actual/literal/killing policies & actions of the anti-woke MAGA reactionaries. it's like equating an edgy Pogo cartoon with the KKK lynching civil rights activists in the 1960's. yes: they really did kill people! really, Bill.

you have to have a granite heart & head even to pretend that the two are in any way "equivalent" & that your reasoned position is to hover between the two like the Biblical Solomon.

I hated it, too. One star. Wretched mess of a script with nothing worthwhile about it. Everything is well-executed, but the core is rotten and the story is not worth telling. I can absolutely get behind fills about loathsome, evil characters, but not when they’re so dull and pointless.
