still working with computers. to my frustration. User choice and consent-based system design matters. Local-first software is always superior. Updates should never be forced. Reproducible, deterministic systems are the only ones that should be trusted.

Really nice to see this! When we say "user-owned," most of the time individual users don't actually want to run their own infrastructure. But a group of researchers banding together to run infra BY and FOR users like themselves — maybe that's what user agency meant all along 🫶

I need people to stop using AI to make slides. - We can all Tell - It does not look Good - it does not give the impression you are Trying - and ffs if there is one things LLMs are NOT good at today: it's being concise, and communicating in minimal text. Aka the main feature of a good slide deck.

So it's come to my attention that if you say "show your reasoning" to Fable, you run REAL high odds of getting nettle-slapped and session interrupted. Also if you say "i agree with your reasoning" enough in session, and Fable starts to think in its internal monolog about "reasoning": nettle slap.

I wholly and un-ironically believe that versioning ought to make up a significant fraction of any formal training in computers. Multiple full year courses in your degree. And there should be a set of journals and conferences on it, endowed chairs, advanced research institutes, the whole nine yards.

Someone needs to revisit the linux kernel OOM code. Violently. It is by far the most absurdly not-fit-for-use part of the kernel. Second place for the title isn't even close (whatever it is).

"Application development did not change much for 20 years, but now, a new wave is crashing in. Most computers in the future must be put to work at least in part w/o programmers. Not surprisingly, programmers will instinctively resist methods described in this book." - 1982, James Martin (cont'd)

Have we crossed a threshold where enough projectors in the world are widescreen yet that slide decks should be made in 16:9 instead of 4:3?

We live in epistemic Hell. We must grapple with two incompatible truths: - Almost all theories of powerful forces secretly manipulating world events are false; and - We know that there are powerful forces secretly manipulating world events.

i'm gonna say one more thing about this. one other aspect of this particular knot of anti-intellectualism is innumeracy. if I told you flooding was a problem in some neighborhood and we needed to figure out how to redistribute water, you probably wouldn't say "oh you mean like a cup?!"

i think if we discovered a spider that could weave valid English language sentences in its web, it'd raise a lot of really interesting questions about humanity even if we decided that the spider wasn't really reasoning

Hotels in Sweden are just some absolutely extraterrestrial amount of bureaucracy hell, ever time I try to interact with them. One chain has swallowed almost everything. And their technical competence is near zero, nobody on the phone or desk is empowered to fix anything, and it just suuuuuucks.

I let a Claude do a project in Go last night instead of Rust... And was just *ASTOUNDED* how much wall-clock faster results happened. Language and toolchain economic still **absolutely** matter in post-AI programming.

Wishing for a norm for root-parameterized links in Markdown. E.g. `[linky text](THISROOT/foo/bar.md)` and then you define the capslock bit Somewhere Else. At repo scale, or something. Would help enormously with having e.g. multiple vaults of documents with partial overlap of subtrees.

this might be kind of an, idk, 43 degree take or something, but I think tools should not poll `git status` rampantly. Either that or we have to talk about how git caches the index. Because teaching my filesystem sync tools to ignore or specially handle `**/.git/index` is kinda Not Super Great.

By 2022 Google Translate had been using transformer models for several years. By 2014 Facebook was using deep convolutional neural nets (DeepFave) for face detection. Literally the things you think were “before LLMs” are either basically indistinguishable from LLMs or their direct predecessors.

There's some kind of a post-eternal-september problem in some things that AI "knows" about, in that if it was already popular, and had a bunch of stack overflow posts about it that were confidently wrong in various ways, now AI is likely to be confidently wrong about those things. Like git. -.-

So if you wanted to make a proglang And have mutable parts of structures be obvious, at a glance. Like you can't embed or refer to things can have them be mutable when reached via a structure or reference, unless they SAY they can be mutable. Taint. Aggressive taint. ...what would you call that

We are JUST scratching the surface of what’s possible with social technology. Do you have a form-breaking idea for an app or digital platform that connects or informs people? We’re offering you three months to organize your thoughts: newpublic.substack.com/p/what-if-yo...
If you have a wild idea that looks nothing like what’s come before, but is still about humans connecting to humans or local and civic information environments, that's awesome. If you're trying to reimagine how people communicate with one another using technology, great! Everything shouldn't be Facebook-shaped.
