still working with computers. to my frustration. User choice and consent-based system design matters. Local-first software is always superior. Updates should never be forced. Reproducible, deterministic systems are the only ones that should be trusted.

May I interest either of you in a window manager that vibes similarly? A video is probably worth a kiloword (but forgive my quiet narration): ...but also tldr infinite canvas. Its just for a lot more than just terminals. Also it's on tangled ofc ;) tangled.org/warpfork.bsk...

I need a feature for reskeeting of skeet pairs, specifically for this pair. The irony that it's practically a choir effort, when seen in it's original context, is also just extreme chef's kiss

... Might accidentally be doing something about this today: a webcomponents-based ui kit that's aggressively good at being usable (and discoverable!) even with keyboard alone and no mouse. It's being born in another application, but might the extractable. Drop a comment or DM if interested!

Found a new linux kernel bug? Someone with more patience than me plz dissect ><
Picture of a monitor with some sad terminal block font text on it, indicating something loopingly bad about /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs . The computer does not resume.

...the proximate cause seems to be an OOM during suspend coming from... element-desktop. I was doing hundreds of other things on this machine but somehow it was element-desktop that oomed. Wild. Matthew don't at me

#windowmanager poasting ZoomWM zones can now shrink. (This whole time they've autoexpanded when windows push them to; it took me a while to need shrinking, but it finally happened. 🤭) Oh yeah did I mention ZoomWM has Zones now? They're like virt desktops but spacial.

If anyone ever wonders why I'm openly hostile to floating point numbers in protocol design: This Is Why. Some utterly fascinating and excellent work about floating point number printing being presented at @gopherconeu.bsky.social . Also, I never want anyone to have to think about this stuff. 🫠😅

And what, exactly, are DPI-aware applications supposed to do when running on a machine with multiple monitors, which can have different DPI, and the window gets moved across them? Or even sized so that it's on *both* of them simultaneously? DPI adaptation just doesn't make any sense.
screenshot of arandr, a monitor management gui for linux/x11, with several monitors that are of different sizes and positioned as logically adjacent to each other.

I might get haters for this but I think the concept of dpi scaling on computer screens is just kinda... Dumb? On phones it's maybe defensible but on full size computer monitors absolutely not.

Rust, WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?? Who thinks making diffs like this is a good idea?? Why is there a config flag for rustfmt that can fix this, and it's shipped in the code running on my computer, but it's also not permitted for me to use it because something something unstable something nightly????
Picture of a git diff that's three removed and four added lines, but it's only one or two words of changes. The diff is entirely an artifact of changed line wrapping, and has been produced by a code formatter tool. It's almost impossible to see what the actual change is; the code formatter has obscured rather than clarified it. It's also incredibly likely that logically unrelated code changes could cause merge conflicts with this change.

These lil grey boyos can also be used to resurrect the process that left them behind. In some cases, it even does excellent stuff with zero conf. Demo: two distinct firefoxen (with distinct "--profile=foo" args) get relaunched on doubleclick, and get immediately mapped into their former positions.

Found the video for that talk: m.youtube.com/watch?v=VCT4... The whole thing is worth watching front to back, but it really starts cooking on this particular detail around 12m12s in.
Frame from the video linked in the post, showing a slide about "levels of agency", and a list of techniques in increasing order of power. "Export to common formats" is the weakest; "continuous export" is in the middle; "bi-directional sync" is most preferred.

Also! Fun bonus anecdata: while I don't remember this gal's name, she was also elected to the latest Norwegian Parliament -- I believe by direct vote -- She's... I dunno, the early 20s, I believe? Age doesn't guarantee good or bad, but... MMP sure doesn't make gerontocracies. Ain't that a relief.

To offer something concrete: Here's a peek at how MMP played out in the recent national election in Norway (image of the news, middle of the count, non-final numbers). As you can see, there's a healthy number of parties. Some are sizable, but the show hosts are discussing possible coalitions.

Large parts of the drug discovery and genome-function mapping processes should be a MASSIVELY PARALLELIZABLE problem: physical parallelism in biosci requires basically sugar water. And mechanized pipetting. C'mon. This should be SO fundable.
100
warpfork @warpfork.bsky.social · 30/08/2025
If you're a computer scientist: imagine inventing the A-star algorithm, but then being told it's impossible to test it in practice because we're all still running around with abacuses. That's what manual pipetting is in biosci. The scale. Is. TERRIBLE. And it blocks research that should be easy.
100
warpfork @warpfork.bsky.social · 30/08/2025
Think of manual pipetting in bioscience today the same way you'd think of abacuses in calculus classes. It's absurdist. But it's still how labs and researchers are trying to slog along. No wonder there are so relatively few advances in the field, and lifespan gains seem to have leveled off!
100
warpfork @warpfork.bsky.social · 30/08/2025
Any tool is better than no tool, but manual pipetting is: - an absurd waste of high-skill time, - alarmingly inaccurate, - and scales incredibly poorly. This means many labs work with such poor replication levels that noise can overwhelm data. Biotech isn't going far fast until this changes.

Cropped to exclude the name, because the poster obviously isn't bad, they're just resident of a whole system that's failing -- It drives me ABSOLUTELY FUCKING BONKERS that the most educated bioscientists on the planet are almost all still working with handheld pipettes. Time👎batching🚫accuracy🙅 ⁉ 🤯

💯💯💯 Cross-disciplinary, humane version control tools are a huge need. Convenient anecdata: I just wandered into a physics research lab -- not a programmer's office -- and I just saw... This: A Git Cheatsheet, dead center of the wall. Version Control is important! (And not just for programmers!)

The main signal I'm getting here is the whole world is way too sensitive to press releases. Like, yeah, ya'll were probably a bit frothing about AI before. But ya'll are still frothing, by reacting this hard. Someone made a cheaper version of something... ...that still has no PMF. OKAY, SO??
