And you're not going to pursue a diagnosis, and jump through all those fucking hoops, unless you've got a pretty good idea what's going on in the first place. I'd be more worried if private (still NHS-route!) clinics were _not_ diagnosing most of the people who come to them

It isn't helpful to just finger-wag at people who had no other choice but to go private (or use Right To Choose) for many reasons, but *especially* not when the alternative would have got them exactly the same standard of assessment!

I wish more reporting on private ADHD/autism assessment providers mentioned that many NHS pathways - as in, the default local not-Right-To-Choose ones - are outsourced to those same providers. If there are quality concerns, the Government should be investing in high-quality NHS pathways.

Thinking today of 'Klaus'. What a lovely film. 'A true act of goodwill always sparks another'. If we try our best to do what we can in our own circles, it spreads out like a ripple. I think that's all we can ever do, but it's an exponentially powerful act, isn't it? Anyway. Back to work.

Pen and watercolor

A pack of witches dance around a fire circle summoning a massive demon in the flames. One of our witches is down though, reader. She lets her sisters know that she won’t be continuing the circle. “Gotta sit this one out, sisters,” she says. “Rolled my ankle.”

I played around with adding a lot of detail to this scene (more shadows, trees in the background, etc.) I think the simpler version works but I’m not sure how I feel about the fire demon drawing. I think I like it. Was having trouble getting the composition of the scene set up with a text bubble in the bottom right. I do like the purple against the black dresses and little boots.

Didn't take my Elvanse this morning as I wanted to run without stressing about heart rate; took 10mg methylphenidate when I got back so I could concentrate on some PhD writing, and now I am so sleepy I can barely keep my eyes open 🫠 Can't possibly have ADHD though, it's apparently a myth

Rico Charges @NoChorus

Once at my granny's house my uncle excitedly said a James Bond film was on the tv. My Da said "sure they're all the same, a load of lads shooting at one lad then a mountain blows up." My uncle got really mad at how reductive that was then became furious when the mountain blew up.

My Da, of course, knew it was the one where the mountain blows up at the end. This was a foundational lesson which illustrated to me that walking the path of the hater means knowing more about something that people

My dad was a bus driver; he once got in trouble for bunking off 'sick' and showing up on the telly on the same day, in the depot canteen, in the crowd at the Headingley test match

Exactly, and we have to make sure our own oxygen masks are properly fitted and working before we help others. We're neither use nor ornament if we don't have our own boundaries and know when to step back if we are causing more harm than good. But, again. Requires knowledge and experience.

Oh, for sure. And ultimately we don't actually owe anyone an explanation, or to educate them, especially when we are hurting.

Again, I do think a lot of those responses are rooted in lack of genuine insight and understanding... I don't think most people would say something if they knew how actively harmful it was. I always try to see the best in people. I think it's simultaneously one of my worst and best traits.

I don't think it's even mockery for the vast majority of people, I think it's just... they don't get it. Really don't get it. A blackness that's so outside of their reality it's never anything more than skeptical theory. They might mean well, and think they're helping, but they just don't *get* it.

Fortunately I've had a lot of experience and training in this area which it makes it easier on the professional / Union side, but it's so, so hard not to get personal when it's people you know and care about.

Wangle-BOO-ry @wangleberry.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Yeah, it's hard sometimes to take a step back, keep yourself regulated, not just tell someone what they 'should' do, and just be there for them while they ride it out / get some spoons back to do the stuff that will help, even if you've been in that place. It's really hard.

It is almost impossible to convey the overwhelming awfulness of severe depression and anxiety to someone who hasn't experienced those things. Conversely, I think we can also underplay our own issues and not take them as seriously as we should, because of that 'someone else is worse off' feeling

Exactly. There's this sort of weird media view that poor mental health is, you know, secretly a bit glamourous, a bit artistic. It's fucking not. It's being a fucking nightmare to be around, and pushing everyone away, and bringing everyone else down with you, and feeling terrible about it

Drives me round the fucking bend. The deeply unwell brain doesn't always have the insight it needs to take care of itself, even when you've been able to put good habits in place while well! You cannot 'coffee and a single therapy session' your way out of the pit!
