Not just about the vote. Democracies rely on their institutions to keep the power of their leaders & government responsible & constrained. Failing to do so for such a corrupt & inept administration gives noone outside the US confidence this carnage will not happen again no matter who is President.

US response "More showmanship than escalation" largely because an almost equivalent value of goods like cement were removed from the tariff list at the same time. Trump & company is trying to provoke us but calm & measured is still the best course. #cdnpoli

These are very greedy people but as Drezner noted, they're also "so lazy that they keep self-sabotaging." Part of the self interest mantra allure is it's the easier & more personally rewarding route. It also has them relying on raw power rather than make an effort to come up with a viable strategy

This is the real contrast against US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calling #Canada a yippy dog yesterday. That leadership wants to put down people to elevate their own status. Our leaders recognize Canadians want to help everyone rise above the challenges we are all facing. #cdnpoli

The idea that America faced towering tariff walls abroad isn't supported by the numbers. Before the trade war, most of our trading partners already had tariffs near zero. Canada, Mexico, even China, averaged 2-4%. newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/…

Absent current state of rel'ns, cooperation makes sense but each has to trust the other backs them, especially when following their lead. Pre Trump 2.0, Canada paid a heavy price twice. In 2017 when at US's request, arrested Huawei's CFO & 2024 when, like the US, we put 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs.

The Trump administration’s worldview in a nutshell! This means there’s no point in going back to the negotiating table. The US will continue asking for more than Canada is willing to give. They will keep piling on the pressure until Carney folds because he won’t have a choice, they believe.

Focus on the core leadership difference in government. The White House treats everything as a conflict it will manipulate to win to satisfy its leaders. Our PM & team is working in everyone's best interest. It's why Canadians are much more united behind our leaders than the Americans. #cdnpoli

Thanks! The tariffs look fit for both objectives. Thoughts: Import substitution - requires more east-west supply chain support given our big country (e.g. recent new shipping subsidies to get Ontario steel to Western Canada) Trade diversification: West leans further to Asia while East to Europe.

Regarding the last sentence below in @stephenmarche.bsky.social's piece. #Canada's endurance fits for this battle with the White House, but this is also about trade. On that, it's our reliability & pursuit of mutually beneficial outcomes that matters to the rest of the world. #cdnpoli #cdnecon
While the prime minister’s approach is certainly new, it emerges from deep reservoirs of the Canadian spirit. For nearly a decade, I was a columnist at Esquire magazine. During that time, one of the greatest discrepancies I noticed between Canadians and Americans — and Canadian and American men in particular — was in their basic idea of what earned respect. For Americans, the capacity to project power, the ability to make things happen, to win, are the primary virtues. In Canada, the defining virtue is toughness, the capacity to endure.
