I would take more seriously the people promoting the idea of AI consciousness if they first materially grappled with the (much more obvious) consciousness of animals and how that affects our moral obligations to them.

The main thing I want from the next Congress is leaders who jealously guard Congress’s power. Want to deploy the military overseas? Not until we declare war. Tarriffs? That’s our call, not yours. Don’t want to spend the $ we allocated? The White House operations budget is now $2.78 a week. Have fun.

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.

That’s how far we’ve fallen. I can’t ask teachers to use a preferred nickname if it’s seen as part of a social transition. It’s illegal to support trans kids in even the tiniest, easiest ways.

Two years ago our school district would let parents change a kid’s name in the school database. Teachers didn’t even know my kid’s birth name—all they saw was the name we put in the system. Now, it’s illegal in Texas to refer to a student by a name that doesn’t match their sex assigned at birth.
