Stunning evening for a fell run out with Eden Runners in Martindale.

Good morning from Cumbria. Always nice to run somewhere new - in this case a circuit from Brothers Water over High Hartsop Dodd.

Good morning from Cumbria. Wonderful conditions for a run up Arthur’s Pike to admire the expansive view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells.

Got the name of the summit wrong - it’s Catstye Cam. Not a summit I’ve visited often but it provides a fabulous viewpoint. Particularly in the fading evening light last night. Recommended!

Took me a while but I think I’ve figured that out. North Lakes with Blencathra in the bottom right? Will have to have a careful scrutinise!

Funnily enough, I think our departmental building does indeed straddle a small fault!

Stunning set of wave clouds (altocumulus lenticularis) over the North Pennines this evening. Have to be my favourite cloud type… @metoffice.gov.uk

Good morning from Cumbria. It’s a while since I’ve been up Bowscale Fell via Bannerdale. One of my favourite circuits.

Good morning from Cumbria. The weather’s changed so it was rather wet and windy for morning run up Arthur’s Pike. Fields are looking rather yellow so I’m hoping some much needed rain helps bring back the green.

Good morning from Cumbria. I’ve down with another cough/cold so stayed local but still still good to get out for on Askham Fell.

Good morning from Cumbria. Stunning morning for a run up Caudale Moor. Hard work but rewarded with breathtaking views and some great glacial geomorphology!

Good morning from Cumbria. Rather driech conditions for a morning run but it was nice to meet up with the fell ponies on Askham Moor. Think you’ll like these images @marburybirds.bsky.social!

Ha! Same here! Is it sad to confess that I asked for the book for my Christmas in the late 1980s?! Such an important figure in the field: a great mind and lovely person. Was lucky enough to have him as the external examiner for my PhD.

Also remember going to a talk a while back that emphasised the significance of sublimation in desiccating the surface materials after glaciation. These could then be “rewetted” when glaciers re advanced and supplied meltwater flows into the foreland.

Here are a couple of references I’ve dug out that refer to the preservation of patterned ground (rather than ice-wedge polygons) beneath cold-based ice… www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

I see it’s available on Amazon which is probably a cheaper option than going via the publisher (Wiley). The book does include an extensive section on the preservation of features beneath cold-based glacier ice. www.amazon.co.uk/Glacier-Perm...

Start of the install of one of these courtesy of @imsheat.bsky.social. So hopefully should be fully electric by the end of the week.

A day of very low export rates on @octopus.energy agile outgoing so a day to focus on self consuming anything we generate. Those on the agile import tariff will be doing well!

It’s s while since I’ve wished everyone a good morning from Cumbria. Injury free for now and hoping I can get back into the routine. Lovely early morning run from Haweswater over Branstree and Selside Pike. Serenaded by skylarks and meadow pipits along the way.

I still remember as a teenager in the early 1990s how temperatures exceeding 30°C in mid summer where cause for headline news coverage. Remarkable how the incidence and severity of extreme heat has increased in the meantime.

Several hours late but it was a lovely morning in Cumbria today. Lovely to get out nice and early and start the weekend with a run with a good friend.

More a vehicle that can accommodate both our daughter’s paraphernalia as well as the outdoor kit we like to take away on holiday (bikes and boats).

It’s been a cracker hasn’t it. I’ll have to check my data tomorrow. Key change has been the switch to agile outgoing seeing a dramatic increase in my export.

Richard Waller @wallersaur.bsky.social · 12/04/2026
That’s useful to know. Still learning about the ups and downs of an agile tariff and working out my own strategies.

I don’t know whether this is right but there’s the suggestion that export prices will go negative tomorrow. Does that really mean you’d get charged for your export?! @octopus.energy 🤔

Richard Waller @wallersaur.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
I’ve been impressed by the extent to which the battery discharges during the morning peak to free up and the capacity to absorb surplus solar during low price export windows. Here’s one an example from Wednesday this week. Not that there looks like much prospect of surplus solar here this morning!

Impressed by how “bold” the Powerwall software is in discharging the battery on Octopus Agile Outgoing. Discharged the entire battery during the morning peak in readiness for a day with significant generation but minimal export income. @octopus.energy @maxsec.bsky.social

Good question! Just saw the headline in the Times last night..

Richard Waller @wallersaur.bsky.social · 04/04/2026
Was interesting read that it might be the first time the grid has run with no fossil fuels since 1882! Only on outgoing agile so won’t be able to make use of the negative pricing. Have been wondering why a free hour or two hasn’t been announced…

Finding it fascinating to see how the profiles are varying according to weather and generation mix.
011
Richard Waller @wallersaur.bsky.social · 21/03/2026
I’ve been particularly impressed by the way the battery clearly uses weather forecasts to decide how much to discharge in the morning. Helps with the morning peak and leaves the capacity to charge up with surplus solar during the day before discharging again in the evening.

Richard Waller @wallersaur.bsky.social · 21/03/2026
It’s certainly been far more successful and lucrative a switch than I anticipated with the battery discharging twice each day given sufficient solar yield. Feel I’m now making much more use of the battery to the benefit of myself and the wider energy system.

Richard Waller @wallersaur.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
Just over two weeks since I switched to @octopus.energy agile outgoing and it’s been a genuine game changer. One thing that’s surprised me is how the battery will export in the morning when there’s a good solar yield as it knows it’ll charge on surplus solar during the day. @maxsec.bsky.social
