A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue approaches Green, as Green is reading a book, and sits down.

Sensing someone staring at him, Green looks up from his book.
Green: ...What?
Blue: The internet went down so I can't play with my brother.
Green: So you've decided to stare at me all day instead?
Blue: Yeah?

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
1. The entomology department notice board a sign reads “Employee of the moth: Claire”
(Claire is spelled with an i)

2. Clare and a colleague are scientists wearing lab coats, they look at the board. He says “Congrats, But I think they made a typo.”

“Damn, do they did.” Says Clare

3. Clare in the office, seen from outside “Sorry to bother you boss, but my name is spelled wrong on the poster”

4. Her boss is a human-sized moth in a lab coat sitting behind a desk “Apologies Clare, I’ll get that fixed.”

I know it would be a lot, but not that big a difference compared to concrete blocks mass of material. If you build a tower to haul blocks you might as well haul a similar amount of dirt, or build water towers, to make a pumped hydro station, which will have fewer issues in the long term.
110
walkthemaxplanck.bsky.social @walkthemaxplanck.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Not necessarily. You can literally dig a hole in the ground to do pumped hydro, and long term maintenance will still be far lower.

This second one has tighter viability constraints, but still finds enough storage capacity for about half a year of global energy consumption. It also includes a helpful map of sites. Electric transmission can cover some of the gaps, but not all. pubs.rsc.org/ee/article/1...

That analysis has been done actually. I'll see if I can find it, but the conclusion was that the entire world could easily use pumped hydro for energy storage when renewables aren't running, even very flat places (electrical lines can carry electricity very far).

It's more likely to be criticized by green energy advocates. Gravity batteries utilizing concrete actually kinda suck for a variety of reasons. Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is superior in basically every way. See this short video for mildly funny/sarcastic explanation. youtu.be/iGGOjD_OtAM?...

Fair. But I think that's more an issue of the failings of public education and our media ecosystem, not a problem with the argument itself. Someone arguing a scientifically backed claim (or a mathematically provable truth) is not obligated to change their argument to accommodate public ignorance.

Then there's the effect of man-made aerosoles which are causing some short term cooling, but leave the atmosphere fairly quickly, thus masking some of the warming we would have otherwise gotten and will get in the future.

It is baffling, disheartening, and kind of soul crushing to see the results of how horrible public math education has been. This is not complicated. Percents are literally taught in elementary school, and even the "advanced" use of percents is no later than middle school.

For the many people who seem to be confused by this, a brief example to show why it's correct. If change without humans would have been -0.3, and instead we've gotten +1.5, then humans would have caused +1.8. 1.8 > 1.5, therefore also > 100% of 1.5. Those numbers are only for illustrative purposes.
