Das Motiv der Ausgrenzung betrifft nicht mehr nur die Ränder, sondern hat längst auch die breite Mitte erfasst. Fast jedes Thema führt mittlerweile auch dort reflexhaft zur Lagerbildung und zur Ausgrenzung anderer Sichtweisen und Meinungen: der Umgang mit Migration, die Innere Sicherheit, die Ausgestaltung unseres Sozialstaates – zwischendurch sogar die Frage der Wahrnehmung des Stadtbilds.

Was früher eine demokratische Auseinandersetzung war, wird heute unmittelbar zum Kulturkampf erklärt. Aus Streit wird das hohle Schüren von Verdachtsmomenten, aus Differenzen in Einschätzungen und Meinungen wird ein moralisches Urteil. Dabei treiben allzu häufig ausgerechnet jene, die Debatten durch Empörung und Diskreditierung im Namen eines „Kampfs gegen Rechts“ unterbinden wollen, die Polarisierung weiter voran. Denn die ständige Stigmatisierung anderer Positionen führt zu einer Normalisierung der Radikalisierung. Die gesellschaftliche Mitte wird dadurch in enge Korridore gedrängt, während die Ränder scheinbar grenzenlose Räume erhalten.
