That was very moving, and takes me back 17 years to my own mother’s death. Look after yourself, through all the different stages of grief, as they can creep up on you and knock you for six sometimes. If you dream about your parents, as I do, may you keep dreaming, because it becomes such a comfort.

This is why cities need trees. Hard surfaces and parked cars can reach extreme temperatures, while shaded grass and tree-covered areas stay dramatically cooler. This is the urban heat island effect in one image: hard surfaces absorb and radiate heat, while vegetation and shade reduce it.

Estimated annual deaths include: “more than 1,000 harbour porpoises and common dolphins …, 10,000 seabirds and 500 seals. Six humpback whales and 30 minke whales were also found dead in Scottish creel ropes.” Lots of non-target fishes as well. And the target fishes have a terrible death. Not humane.

Well worth reading this especially in the context of the narrative of a “war on the motorist”. Importantly, Kyd recognises that harmful driving is normalised, understands we need to change the narrative in how we think about poor driving and is clear the legal framework needs work.

Yes, of course there are people who can’t thrive, or survive, without meat. Is this not another reason for developing novel proteins and cultured meat? If you could have a food rich in heme iron that didn’t require the slaughter of animals, wouldn’t you jump at the chance?
