The autonomous ATL Spoke 12-month project is a perfect cost example. $3 million for four automated vans to make 40 trips per day each for a year. At $8,219 per day, Atlanta pays more than $51 per trip, empty or full. At the end of this $3 million rental, the city owns nothing. The tax dollars are gone.

Compare this to MARTA buses: about $700,000 new. MARTA could have owned three new, high-capacity buses and hired several bus drivers for three years for the same amount the city paid to rent four luxury vans for a single year.

Right they did, but that's not what caused this. They do need more dollars though (and to waste less money subsidizing parking)
The World Cup expenses weren’t the main factor behind the overspending, Patterson said, and some tournament-related expenses are still in line for federal reimbursement, money that will count as revenue in this year’s budget

I suspect the driver who crashed was coming south on Roswell and went straight instead of veering with the road. Horrible so-called engineering by GDOT makes this road very dangerous. Also, had the BMW SUV driver been using even a basic ADAS lane keeping system they could have avoided this crash.

Currently the sidewalks do not have any curb at all between the sidewalk and the road, seemingly to help drivers crash off the road even faster. Drivers on Roswell right after the crash were staring at their phones, of course. 3 pics, there were others. up.sandyspringsga.gov/sites/defaul...

Crash tonight at the Play Matters/Driving School facility at 4641 Roswell Rd. Sandy Springs continues to not make progress on Phase 1 of the T0019 project from 2022 to upgrade the sidewalks here, nevermind add barriers, as drivers repeatedly crash into parking lots where the city knows kids go.

I don't know about the art, but one of these dense midtown condos is selling for 4.8MM. The claims about it being politically difficult in #SandySprings to subdivide are true. But a more useful question is, how many homeowners would like a politician to increase their property value through zoning?

AJC ignoring the main issue. The primary way to increase the population of school age children would be to allow denser and more affordable housing, which is why Dekalb's school enrollment and closure problem will keep getting worse. www.ajc.com/education/20...
There’s no avoiding the fact that DeKalb County has a capacity problem. The district has room to educate about 18,000 more students than it currently is — that’s more students than nearby Rockdale County current enrolls. Enrollment has been trending downward — about 10% over the past decade — thanks to demographic changes, declining birth rates and the rise of school choice. Schools that are underused are more expensive to operate, and DeKalb leaders say they can better serve students in larger schools.

Maybe the Georgia education officials should look harder at the numbers Mississippi is posting, bsky.app/profile/jake...
Third-graders who fail to meet reading standards are forced to repeat the third grade. Prior to 2013, a higher percentage of third-graders moved on to the fourth grade and took the NAEP fourth-grade reading test. After 2013, only those students who did well enough in reading moved on to the fourth grade and took the test.

Wainer et al. share the figure at the top of this post to show how this works quantitatively, and then they continue:

As previously mentioned, the latest NAEP data for 2024 show even more impressive, “miraculous” results on the fourth-grade literacy test scores – a tie for 8th place. Strangely though, for the eighth-grade literacy test, the state’s rank dropped to a tie for 42nd place! This should clear up any miracle illusions that may remain. Need more proof that Mississippi public education is without miracles? The 2024 NAEP fourth-grade mathematics scores rank the state at a tie at 50th! The eighth-grade scores also qualify for 50th place.

Good read. Among other things, it convinced me that the overwhelming prominence of Toussaint Louverture in my prior (and still) limited understanding of the revolution, without any disrespect to him, was a product of anti-Haitian historiography.

Piedmont Hospital and associated medical facilities have so much traffic going to them, and only the 110 bus for transit connectivity. State route 19, Roswell, is clogged. It's not going to happen but a new heavy rail line going north from Arts Center would be a better project than GDOT's new lanes.

defunding local schools is a horrible result for metro Atlanta. Kids can't vote and it is a real shame how few voters understand that having a representative government means voting on their behalf.
