Now, if you've got the same dumbshit ideas as him, you're a racist and islamaphobe the same as him, sure, GTFO. But you're not responsible for the fall of the CAQ, the CAQ was just a terrible government and even Quebeckers can only take so much.

...people still don't have doctors, lease transfers aren't allowed in the same way anymore, so now rents are going up. The problem was that you made people lives materially worse, not that you somehow fucked up the transition. Throw Legault under the bus, because that's where he belongs.

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 06/10/2026
That out-of-touch millionaire only made it into office because Quebeckers are so desperate for a mostly non-corrupt government, they'll give practically anyone a try. But your dumb party found the limits of Quebec's xenophobia and the taxes were still high, the roads are still falling apart...

For some reason, I find it overwhelmingly annoying that Frechette is taking full responsibility for the fall of the CAQ. Lady, the only responsibility you bear is thinking that Legault was a leader worth following with ideas worth listening to. www.cbc.ca/player/play/...

But for essentials, I do agree that the government should be providing as much as possible. A co-op would even be the step up, I guess.
010
VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 06/10/2026
I dunno. MEC was a really popular and good co-op until we stopped paying attention to the board and the elections and only paid attention to the prices. And what is FOSS but a coding co-op? So I think the desire is there, but it's the bootstrapping that's hard.

Or maybe it's just that it's hard to herd cats and get every person to realize what's in their best interests. But if the Canadian government REALLY wanted to help, promoting co-ops or having a nationalized grocery chain would go right at the top of the list.

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 04/10/2026
I wish it were easier to start or join co-ops here. It feels like you can spin up a corporation for any BS thing—Torment Nexus Corp. Ltd. would be trivial for us to create—but if your purpose is to intrinsically make things better for people and reduce corporate profits, there's so much red tape.

These traitorous goofs offered up our FRESH WATER????? Full exposé on these idiot Alberta separatists here: archive.is/rhGUj
Excerpt from the Globe article reads: “A Globe and Mail investigation has found that Republican political operatives were on the ground in Alberta this year to assist the separatist campaign in its bid to leave Canada, while harbouring their own aspirations for the province to secede.
The Globe also found that when Alberta separatist leaders went to Washington to meet with the U.S. State Department, they offered up key assets from the province's resource portfolio, including access to fresh water and royalties on crude oil, in exchange for help transitioning to independence.
Through interviews with The Globe on both sides of the border, people involved in politics, the corporate sector and Alberta's pursuit of separatism have described persistent efforts by figures in the U.S. administration and conservative political establishment to support groups seeking American expansionism and independence for Alberta.”

How about we talk about how much of the *profit* that Canadian *workers* creating it get? You act like working for the benefit of some rich oligarchy is everyone's ultimate end goal in and of itself.

As a programmer, it's obvious to me why it's great at constructing language things—that was the original intent. Translation is its raison d'etre, so it's no wonder that it's better than that than at most things. But it's still all supervised. It's more like a stand mixer than a baking robot.

The domains in which it does coding better are also limited. It still has trouble with very large codebases, it often gets stuck in local minima and burns tokens, and if the output isn't meaningfully testable by an LLM, it requires a lot of oversight (think games or any creative endeavour).

I was looking in the Penticton subreddit and everyone there, to my surprise, was deciding to vote for the Greens. They wouldn't vote for Boultbee (who ended up resigning anyway) and none of them would vote for the Con candidate. I don't think the Greens have even ANNOUNCED their candidate yet.

I have a good friend who swam the English channel as part of a team, and she talks about how 2 of her 4 stints were done on no food at all, because she'd been vomiting non-stop after the 1st stint. I would have just drowned. We're not even in the same universe.

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 27/09/2026
My girlfriend is 15th in the world (as of this week!) in women's sprint tri in her age group, and I can tell you that while I'm faster than her for short (< 4 hours) distances, once we cross the endurance mark, she could absolutely leave me for dead. You want endurance sport? You want women's sport.

The top finishing man did 21 loops vs. their 33. I can't find the notes to confirm anything more than that, but I'm pretty sure there were fewer than 10 women that entered and ~35-40 men. All the women that showed up did really well (again, info not available; I saw a reel on instagram).

So a 'backyard ultra' if you don't know (I didn't) is where you do some pre-determined distance every 1 hour. They modified it for Triathlon and made it a sprint tri every 2 hours. The co-winners are 2 women who did it for 66 hours. tri-today.com/2026/09/two-...

I voted for Carney to avoid PP, but he's gone from highly disappointing (enviro, corp welfare, etc) to now, with these labour restrictions, it's all too much. It's crossed a line for me. Rachel is the most prominent media I see calling foul on all this, so I just joined Patreon to support her work.

When I was young, I dreamed of being a pro cyclist. Now when I watch pro cycling, I'm SO GLAD I was never good enough to be a pro. It honestly looks absurdly miserable so much of the time.

To the extent that I have any strong opinions about cars, I now believe that it’s impossible for a luxury car to have a petrol engine. I don’t care how much leather is in it, even an inexpensive EV is going to be a better experience.

There is no better or more comfortable piece of cycling clothing than the skinsuit.
My titanium Gloria All-Road propped up overlooking the lake. High contrast picture of the sky and lake and trail. The clouds have a very feathered texture. Me in a red, white and orange skinsuit riding towards a tunnel in the rock. Me in my skinsuit in the mirror. My hair is a mess.

Nothing makes me dislike Generative AI more than the true believers that think it’s the solution to all problems and uncritically use it as a citation. It is not a primary source. You want to use it to surface links to papers because Google sucks now? Fine. But chatGPT isn’t a source itself, dummy.

It was for Chinese New Year. You're not really the target audience. (I can't read it either, and I kind of AM the target audience, but whatever. Translating it wasn't that hard.)

That's an interesting hypothesis. They say they don't store anything, but running it through a model and just adjusting training weights without retaining data might be possible? I think they might also be having beef with OpenAI and are undermining whatever it is they're working on with Jony Ive.

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 12/09/2026
I think it's actually doing the OPPOSITE. People have a bad reaction to things like the meta glasses because they're creepy, and I think this is falling into the same camp. This is less useful AND people are creeped out by it. If that's Apple's plan, they suck at it.

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 12/09/2026
...all this new feature is doing is making it LESS likely that someone can record a cop, or an abusive partner, or a shitty landlord or boss. It actually undermines everything I think is useful because companies can't stop finding ways to shoehorn AI into things that don't need it. 🙄

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 12/09/2026
But, like, the voice memo app exists on my watch RIGHT NOW. I can leave it running and record a conversation EXACTLY and have a transcript of it later, TODAY. The use case I thought it was covering is actually already there, and given how I think it may be useful for safety or legal evidence...

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 12/09/2026
It's hard to understand the utility of that. It records things at all times to give you a bad summary and at the same time, it gives people the heebie-jeebies. All you're doing is making people mad for the most marginal of benefit: making OpenAI angry that your listening device is better than theirs
220
VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 12/09/2026
But even if we assume all those things work, after looking at the details of the daily summary, I think it's ultimately worse than I was thinking. It's just...not good? It's a vague summary of your day, with theoretically no identifiable information.

I had a half-written response to this that I lost when my machine restarted. But yes, it's going to your phone, encrypted, and it's going to Private Cloud Compute, which AFAIK, hasn't been compromised and doesn't have any backdoors yet--pending legislation to repeal the laws of math and cryptography

Ah, you're right, I was paying attention to the wrong thing. But the Siri Recap is even LOWER fidelity. It's not a transcript, it's got no identifying information (...though I'm not sure how you keep track of a multi-person conversation this way) and also no actual audio recording to refer back to.

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
I maintain that being able to secretly record things like the police, dangerous drivers, abusive partners, etc. are a net good. Sometimes it's the only way to hold people accountable for the bad things they do when they think nobody else is watching.
000
VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
4. It's also worth saying that at least for now, the feature is a 15s rolling audio buffer, so it's not capturing whole conversations, and it requires a phone nearby to work, so it's not meaningfully different to a phone recording you.

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
3. When you're in public, your right to privacy is HEAVILY diminished--there is no expectation of privacy in public spaces, by and large, at least not under the law.
100
VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
1. Yes. At least in North America, at least for now. Government agencies have had a famously hard time getting data off of iPhones. 2. Secret recordings on phones are already possible RIGHT NOW. If that's your worry, hide forever. You lost that fight at the advent of cassette tape recorders.

I also wish I had a camera on my bike to record all the assholes driving and screaming at me. Some guy whipped his jeep around on the highway on my last ride and came to confront me because I gave him the finger for being an asshole.
110
VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
I am, in all honestly, much less worried about individuals doing it than the government doing it. If I had to choose between everyone having a watch like this or cameras on every corner where the cops can track you, I know what I'd pick.
100
VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
I don't disagree that broadly speaking, with the people around you, in private, it's pretty gross. In public, the laws surrounding one's right to privacy are pretty vague and a little convoluted (I looked it up once to see what the rules are about taking pictures in public).
100
VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
As it stands, anyone can turn the voice recorder on on their phone *right now* and turn the screen off and put it off to the side; this changes very little in that regard. But it may be easier to do it safely like this.
100
VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
No, that can get you killed or thrown in jail. Like, defund the police, but tools like this are truly essential for some people in dangerous situations. A woman recording her abusive husband like this would NOT be able to hold her phone up to record him.

VJ Goh @vjgoh.chloris.ca · 10/09/2026
Anyway, I do suspect you're right: we're likely to have more agreement than not. But I would generally distrust anyone that makes broad claim about left-leaning people like this. It is a better take that Macdonald was an outright evil force than a good one, even if the truth is more nuanced.
