Working with you all was AWESOME! Yes, a part of it was because we brought cell and evolutionary biology together in a fun way. But I think it was also because you guys are such kind, motivating and exciting collaborators!!! We must do it again!

Such fun collab with the @vjesticalab.bsky.social @unil.bsky.social, revisiting the first question I became obsessed with as a PhD student: why do cells that fuse during sex need to differ genetically even when they look the same? 🙌 Celso Martin and Harry Booth for beautiful experiments+theory work

And finally thank you @crick.ac.uk for the beautiful summary of our work and the wonderful @zenahadjivasiliou.bsky.social who made this into an awesome collaboration! www.crick.ac.uk/news/2026-07...

The evolutionary pressure behind sexual asymmetry
A major transition in evolution is the shift from asexual to sexual reproduction in early organisms. But why would a yeast cell, which usually reproduces asexually, choose to mate with a very differen...

Merci @nathalieisorce.bsky.social

You may also wanna check out this popular science blog about our work! It's a fun read on how the two gametes (egg♀️ and sperm♂️) start to become different? This has been a fantastic collaboration with @zenahadjivasiliou.bsky.social and Harry Booth, spearheaded by @celsomics.bsky.social !
The kymographs (left-to-right) follow the mating of a fission yeast gamete pair. One gamete expresses a cytosolic marker (blue) that spreads as partners fuse. Nuclear marker (magenta) allows visualization of partner nuclei fusing, oscillating and undergoing meiotic divisions. Gametes express the meiotic factor (green), which is induced in one gamete first and degraded during meiosis.

Why did the two gametes (egg♀️ and sperm♂️) start to become different? It's a strategy to optimize the costs and benefits of investing into offspring! Read our brand new @pnas.org story that finds a molecular mechanism behind this evolutionary idea proposed in 1972 by Parker, Bell and Smith.
