Some key phrases for them to reach for: “Not cool.” “Ew, why would you say that?” “Explain the joke.” “Hey man, we don’t move like that. Not cool.” “That’s a weird thing to say.” “What the heck?? Why would you say that?” “That’s not funny.” And I’m sure there are plenty of other good ones.

This would also be an effective way to inform them of what misogyny and misogynistic language IS. What it’ll look like or sound like in practice. What to listen for. Key words and phrases that they’ll hear from their friends that should trigger their phrase. Might also be good in classrooms too.

You need to create safe roleplay scenarios at home for them to navigate. Ones that flex the muscle, and reassure them that they’re doing the right thing by speaking up against misogyny. And the reason for this is because: People will say what they know you wanna hear.

Parent: What would you do if this happened? Child: The right thing. Parent: Good job! Is not adequate. You need to equip the kid with some simple, confrontational phrases, so when their friends inevitably say misogynistic stuff, they’ve practiced speaking up for when that real moment arrives.

I think there’s something that parents need to do instead of just having conversations with their boys about bodily autonomy, consent, and standing up to defend women/girls. Parents also need to equip their kids with easy phrases to use to stand up to their peers, and roleplay those scenarios.

I wish people understood that TV writers: 1. *Have* actually thought more about this than even the most die hard fan. 2. Are beholden to time, money, and owner constraints that fans will never be aware of. 3. Are extremely likely to already be aware of any critiques because (see 1) but (see 2)
