Two-thirds of UK news articles about wildfires this summer haven't mentioned climate change
Analysis from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit adds to concerns that national newspapers are failing to link this summer's extreme weather to climate change and the net-zero policies necessary to mitigate its drastic effects.

Thus the need and desire for Solarpunk. To show how we can use technology to create the world we Actually want to live in rather than putting so much energy into world building the shitty worlds we're already stuck with. It's to inspire people to fight FOR something rather than just Against.

WOW, these baskets are about 9,500 years old! 🤯 Look like they were made yesterday rather than by hunter-gatherers during the Mesolithic! Made of esparto grass, they were found inside the Cueva de Los Murciélagos (Cave of bats), Spain. Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows three small baskets woven from esparto grass. They have been radio-carbon dated to the Mesolithic period some 9,500 years ago. Dimensions:

Left basket: Height = 10.7 cm; Diameter = 7.2 cm
Central basket Height = 9.4 cm, Diameter = 6.5cm
Right basket: Height = 13.5 cm; Diameter = 8.6 cm

The exceptional preservation of the baskets is due to

“The unique conditions for the preservation of organic material in the cave are related to the null humidity resulting from the geological character of the cave. Moreover, a dry wind current is generated by the prevailing climate in the area, and the north-south direction and narrow and deep morphology of the Angosturas gorge channel the wind toward the cave, through the narrow upper entrance. The wind cools as it travels through the cave, increasing in speed; it is cold as it exits through another narrow entrance located in the lower part of the shelter. The lack of prevailing humidity in the area and the circulation of wind in the cave as it cools and dries prevent the proliferation of bacteria, increasing the amount and diversity of preserved perishable material at the site.” Quote from the research article: ‘The earliest basketry in southern Europe: Hunter-gatherer and farmer plant-based technology in Cueva de los Murciélagos (Albuñol)’

I'm shifting the direction of my End Climate Silence newsletter, from climate disinformation to authoritarian propaganda writ large. If you want to understand the dominant discourse of our historical moment and how to combat it — subscribe here 👇 www.endclimatesilence.org/newsletter
What I am going to be doing in this newsletter moving forward is talk about the language of fascism and political disinformation more broadly. I will still bring in climate change as much as I can, while paying attention to the overarching methods and strategies the authoritarian right is using to warp the views of the electorate and create consensus
around their blatant assault on our democracy and our power as citizens with freedoms. I believe this work is valuable right now. Yes, the Republicans command a vast propaganda empire, networked from right-wing think tanks and advertising firms through Congress and the White House to FoxNews and out across the whole global landscape of social media, assisted and amplified by Russian intelligence operations, which are attacking us on every platform. But — and this is something I argued in my book, The Language of Climate Politics - right-wing propaganda only works to create political consensus if its
terms are repeated uncritically by the center-left and the left. It is this repetition that "constructs" political reality, establishing norms and frameworks for action, as well as beliefs and desires. And it is this repetition that enables authoritarianism to creep ever more into the imagined community through which America is constantly being made and
remade. Yet this "authoritarian creep" is PRECISELY what we have the power to combat! We can do it by 1) inoculating people against authoritarian framings and disinformation by talking
about how these discourses work even before they are encountered in the wild, as it were, 2) pushing back when we hear people spreading lies, if not to persuade the liars then to remain committed to the truth, and 3) speaking about what's happening in terms that
don't cede the fight to our enemies before we've even stepped on the field. Here's an example: "The Department of Government Efficiency." I cannot tell you how
many times I've seen Musk's wrecking ball described in its own terms — as "E…
