VISMAI RAO
City-building

Someone mentioned Merwin. Apparently, on the last day of the world, he wanted to plant a tree—We unplugged our beer cans to B’s enthusiasm over the fact that every house of this community including the one we sat in could be dismantled in its entirety within a couple of hours and be shipped off to its next destination. The moon was late but full and we lit incense to drive away the evening swarm of mosquitoes. M had brought a dozen lotus stems but none of us knew how to cook them. No one mentioned the twenty-four trees felled that afternoon. Or the fact that half these woods ringing with the mating calls of brainfever birds would be gone by next summer. If we bothered to turn the music down, I suspect that’s all we’d hear: courtships rendered in three-note trills; and maybe, the chorus of wind-stirred casuarina trees. At some point before midnight, we found a lost firefly pulsing on the wall next to the water filter and we had to guide it out of this readily dismantlable house—gently, but firmly, usher it away to its own territory.

Another fine poem from Tony Leuzzi's Fog Notes. This one is a lifetime in nine lines.
you fifty years. //Meanwhile there are kites and church/a winking light in ribboned fog// tax breaks, bone grafts/skeins of jazz, and in-between/each in-between the story/of your first wool suit: you//wore it once and passed it on.

I really admire this poem by Dane Holt. He takes that particular ‘flatness’ of grief and finds a playfulness within it… which is so hard! How on earth do you play with flatness? Like this:

Gratitude to @esylviapoet.bsky.social for engaging DRESSING THE BEAR (@triohousepress.bsky.social) with depth & care. I'm loving thinking about how death “unteaches the ability to let go” & to be likened to Natalie Diaz in a review: no words, just thank you! 💙⬇️ psalteryandlyre.org/2024/12/06/b...

My poem, “Clean,” from DRESSING THE BEAR (@triohousepress.bsky.social) seems to be the most beloved, and I’m grateful for the ways it’s connected me with so many others who have experienced a similar loss. Thanks for this thread, Kelli! 💙

Slow-reading @susanlleary.bsky.social's poignant meditations on grief @triohousepress.bsky.social This work is a gift 💜
Cover of Susan L Leary's collection 'Dressing the Bear,' Winner of the 2023 Louise Bogan Award: A big white flower with a mustard/brown button at center against a blue background.Twisted Threads

When we look to God, we mean to look head-on at what’s in our peripheral vision, but God is tied to the periphery by a taut string. As we glance to the right or left, God moves proportionally out of view. Why? we ask. The better question: How did the string come to be there?

When I dream of my brother, we sit side-by-side in a 1969 grabber blue Shelby. We talk normal talk, but my brother refuses to face me. As I turn towards him, he turns towards the window. As I turn back to the dash, so does he. We move in sync like this for hours.

It is the dreamer who dreams, but how do those who visit the dreamer come to be there? How does God or my brother begin to relax the string? At some point, I ask my brother to take me to the hospital or the morgue. It doesn’t matter which. I can’t, he says: You’re driving.
