Memorability is not simply a fixed property of words. It emerges from the interaction between semantic structure and functional role/memory mechanisms engaged. "Intrinsic memorability" is likely a misnomer. 7/8

🏁 Result 4: At the semantic category level, cue and target memorability converged almost perfectly (with some caveats). This replicates Aka et al. (2023) and suggests a hierarchy: • category-level structure is stable • item-level memorability is role-dependent 6/8

Vishnu Sreekumar @vishnusreekumar.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
🏁 Result 3: Different properties predict cue vs. target memorability. Good cues: • concrete • frequent • low semantic ambiguity (fewer senses) Good targets: • many incoming associates • greater morphemic complexity Same words. Different determinants. 5/8

Vishnu Sreekumar @vishnusreekumar.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
🏁 Result 2: At the trial level, cue effectiveness was the dominant predictor of recall success. A word's effectiveness as a cue predicted memory performance ~2.5× more strongly than its retrievability as a target. How a word is used matters. 4/8

Vishnu Sreekumar @vishnusreekumar.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
🏁 Result 1: No. Cue memorability was ~2× more reliable across participants than target memorability. The processes that initiate retrieval appear more stable across people than those involved in recovering specific memory traces. 3/8

Vishnu Sreekumar @vishnusreekumar.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Using a large cued-recall dataset (Cox et al., 2018), we examined words that served both as cues and as targets. Question: Is cue effectiveness similar to target retrievability of the same word? 2/8

📢 Now published in @cognitionjournal.bsky.social : “Functional role and semantic structure shape word memorability: Cue–target asymmetries in cued recall." Memorability is often treated as an intrinsic property of stimuli. But is the same word equally effective as a cue vs. a target? 1/8

Happening today, folks! I'm hearing great things about this meeting from them. I wish I could be there but if you're already there, please attend and give us some feedback. This is a project that makes a big leap from another discipline that we really are not experts on. So we'd appreciate feedback!

Ok, thanks. I thought you might be referring to something about the justifications (or the lack thereof) for causal models in psychology and how that might limit us from using the full power of Bayesian (causal) inference, but I guess I made a leap there in assuming you were referring to DAGs.
