If you reconsider your premises in public you have been Owned, and being Owned is a fate worse than death.

you never have to believe a word these people say about how it's a Hard World and Hard Things Must Be Done. they get off on this shit. one thing to think Hassan being executed is justified, another entirely to do it one handed while jacking yourself off like this.

Beyond just writing code, a good LLM can take the place of a lot of research assistants (clean these data, find some papers on this topic, go through all these by hand the check them, etc) Pretty big win for those of us that don't have RAs in our program tbh

I 100% believe that firms believe this, they purchase some software because they want someone they can sue because I've been hearing this since the 90s But I also think this is dumb, if your backup plan when stuff breaks is to fight Oracle/Microsoft/SAP in court, then you have no backup plan

"Ha ha, what are you gonna do with that history degree? Lol" Get a job? History majors do just fine on the job market and always have. Some of the more "practical" degrees don't do any better, might as well take classes in something you enjoy.

I am hesitant to ask this, because some knowledge is not meant to be possessed, but what's wrong with Lib Dems? Why are they like this? I feel like they've kind of always been like this?

My new theory of language is that words get used up over time, and as they do a word converges to a synonym for good or bad, losing all other meaning along the way We're basically already there with "goated" for example, and I think we were there with "Zionist" before I was born

What’s the evidence on rent control? I charted the findings from 112 studies: Great for rent-controlled tenants ✅ But: Pushes up rents for other people ❌ Pushes down new housing construction ❌ Pushes down building quality ❌

Given the time and resource constraints involved, and the inherent power imbalances, there's a surprising amount of good journalism at university student newspapers, which is right in line with Steve's cost center argument

I don't want to say that a preference for seniority is inevitable in unions because it's not, but people that have a lot of influence in an org are frequently the ones that have been there a long time and guess which rules they tend to like

I think this is good advice, but also used Canon and Nikon budget DSLRs are a great choice for a casual photographer They take great pictures, accessories are cheap and easy to find, and the cameras and lenses are extremely affordable right now

It turns out that a decent acid test for "is this a good MBA program" is whether they generally admit people straight out of undergrad, because the ones that might be worth paying for mostly don't

People say wild stuff about these data, and I wonder if they aren't doing some sort of % of disposable income in their heads, because my boring, normal apartment complex verifies income and won't rent to you if you're above 33% of gross

Older centrists think we want dignified statesmen who will stand above the fray. Nope. Most Democratic voters basically want petty, vindictive people who are going to make the bullies pay for their crimes and cry hard as they do it. They're begging for it.

It's well-understood that rich people stay rich because they can afford to buy Rolexes in bulk, thereby getting a discount on a more durable mechanical watch compared to its budget-friendly competition

It's wild looking at the replies go nuts about bulk buying toilet paper; I promise the owner of your local car dealership does not plan tp purchases, buying household goods is entirely convenience driven for them One of the perks of being rich is buying what you want, whenever you feel like it

If the bad thing we're looking at *also* existed in decidedly pre-capitalist societies in antiquity or the middle ages, it's going to be pretty hard to argue that it is capitalism's fault. Many of society's ills are things capitalism inherited, rather than things it caused.

Quoting this mostly to get this out of Nick's mentions. A fact that can help demystify FICO scores for some people is that credit reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax) cannot *directly* see your income or your assets, just your debts, and therefore FICO can't either

A huge part of what PMC firms like blackwater did/do is just hire soldiers with in-demand training/specialities and actually pay them what they're worth, then turn around and charge the government double that for them. taxpayer paying a middleman so people trained at public expense can work for govt

Going to just pick one part here to take up which is the Rousseauian notion that agriculture leads to land ownership which leads to warfare. If that were true, we'd expect non-agricultural societies (hunter gatherers especially) to be relatively peaceful. Instead, they're hyper-militarized. 1/
