I think it goes deeper than Smash into just consumption as a whole, where when a game comes out, fans of it immediately upon beating it go, “Can’t wait for the sequel that will add more to this.” When that’s not a given anymore from the heyday of the NES era.

I think for some people, it's hard for them to grasp why video games mean so much to many of us. They gave those of us who never won, a way to win. They gave those of us with no control in our lives, something that we COULD control. And that comfort saved me during a lonely and isolated childhood.

The backstory here is that the Squamish people of what is now Vancouver were illegally dispossessed of this land a century ago. They sued, got their land back, and are using their sovereignty to ignore local zoning rules and build 6,000 new homes over the objections of nearby wealthy NIMBYs.
