I am laying in my recliner, in an abundance of pain, trying to rest so I can get some work done later. Then Wynn jumped up and reminded me that my real job is to pet her on demand and accept any and all cuddles she will deign to give.

I wish this fake history didn't resonate so well with the current moment. There is often TRUTH in fiction that readers ignore because they think of it as about someone else, somewhere else. This was imagined for the US. Building on US history. #ArtPredictsLife #ManInTheHighCastle #PKD
Page 24 of Man In The Hogh Castle by Phillip K. Dick. Relevant passage starts in first full paragraph and reads:
"But Africa. They had simply let theor enthusiasm get the better of them there, and you had to admire that, although more thoughtful advices would have cautioned them to perhaps let it wait for a bit until, for instance, Project Farmland had been completed. Now there [emphasis original] the Nazis had shown genius; the artist in them had truly emerged. The Mediterranean Sea bottled up, drained, made into tillable farmland, throigh the use of atomic power-- what daring! How the sniggerers had been set back on their heels, for instance certain scoffing merchants along Montgomery Street. And as a matter of fact, Africa had almost been successful...but in a project of that sort, *almost* [emphasis original] was an ominous word to begin to hear. Rosenberg's well-known pamphlet issued in 1958; the word had first shown up, then. *As to the Final Solution of the Africa Problem, we have almost achieved our objectives. Unfortunately, however *--
Still, it had taken two hundred years to dispose of the American aborigines, and Germany had almost done it in Africa in fifteen years. So no criticism was legitimately in order. Childan had, in fact, argued it out recently while having lunch with certain of those merchants. They expected miracles, evidently, as if Nazis could remold the world by magic. No, it was science and technology and that fabulous talent for hard work; the Germans never stopped applying themselves. And when they did a task, they did it *right* [emphasis original]."

That was difficult to type. It is difficult to read and listen to in the audiobook. If it isn't, you are the reason we can't have nice things, like individual rights. You should seek professional help instead of punishing the world for your insecurities.

Accepting that you may not get out of the pain is a difficult process, but not expecting more than your body can do is necessary for mental health. I struggle the most woth other people's expectations. Slightly more mobile for a few hours isn't improvement, it is just different.

Lakeside lunch.
Foreground is aglaxed blue ceramic plate with and arrangement of of blueberries in a triangle with a lazy straggler in the background next to four strawberry tops. Crumbs are scattered on the plate. The plate rests on a lap of khaki shorts, legs and bare feet extend out of focus toward a blue sky over Grand Lake near Grove, OK.

NATHPO sharing #THPOsAtWork stories also covering the proposed #Section106 revisions. Briece is a good, hardworking archaeologist. As he points out here, poor planning on their part attempts to make it an emergency on ours. 1/8 www.facebook.com/share/p/1EJd...
Imag of article titled "Proposed leadership changes may weaken Tribes' ability to protect sites" by Nicole Montesano. Fearures comments by Briece Edward's and a picture of Breice.

Original text of NATHPO post:
"#THPOsAtWork Briece Edwards, Deputy THPO for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, goes into detail in this Smoke Signals article about the problems with the proposed changes to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. He also explains why it’s unfair that Tribal Nations are essentially being vilified for delays in federal projects when the problem most often lies with the agencies and other entities planning them.

“’What we’re experiencing now is the vilification of Tribes,’ Edwards said. ‘Tribes are the ostensible reason for the problem here and they’re not. This Tribe in particular, we want to work and be the advocate for the resource. The sooner we have awareness that something may be occurring, the more effective we are at that. Engineers are great. Because if you give an engineer a complete set of parameters, they can find an answer. But if you don’t tell them the cultural resources are one of the parameters, they can’t take it into the development design. And again, that then makes the resource the problem. Not the lack of planning. Which is where I would suggest it needs to sit.’”

The Trump administration is trying to gut one of the strongest laws protecting tribal sacred sites, burial grounds, and ancestral lands. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act has worked since 1966. Now a handpicked Council voted to rewrite it..in one week. Here's what at stake.👇

I surveys in cemeteries quite frequently. Childhood mortality was so expected, they designed cemeteries with sections for babies. They planned for the ineffective medical knowledge they had. Then baby sections disappeared. The effects of science & medical advance is literally written in stone.

Very clearly, we are not a serious country. I urge our historic allies to stop pretending we're competent internationally. Let alone hold our historical values & motives. The only way to limit the damage is to treat all official actions as if they are offered in bad-faith & personal self-interest.

Asked my phone if the rain would end soon. This is the response I got. #SignsFromMotherNature (context: we got ~10 inches of rain in 24 hrs,& are approaching, in someway exceeding major 1913 flood which caused the building of dams and levees we now have. Some have placed this as a millennial storm.)
Screenshot of the hourly forecast for Delaware County, Indiana, just north of Muncie. Shows predicted temperate and precipitation type and volume for 2 am through 6 am Friday August 14, 2026. The narrative graph of light blue bars across the bottom shows predicted precipitation in inches going from 0.17 at 2 am, to 0.67 at 3 am, then down to 0.26 at 4 am, then 0.18 at 5 am, then zero at 6 am. The four blue bars resemble what some might identify as a hand with the middle finger fully extended. This resemblance is surely a coincidence and is clearly not mother nature telling us to get off her lawn, or at least stop killing everything currently living on the planet. I said, it is NOT a sign. [It is, however, the consequences of our industrial f----ry with the atmosphere and the chemistry thereof. Now, we are in the finding out stage.]

Screenshot of "Phillip K. Dick: The Collected Stories, Volume 2" audiobook showing the current chapter/story is "Some Kinds of Life" which is about a future solar system with continual wars for access to raw materials that are integral to the technology that becomes integral to daily life. The wars first consume the men. Then they consume the teens, then when they come to conscript the women, she asks "But who will be left?" The reply is, we have to have X, or Y convenience won't be the same. We have to secure access at all costs... but if we all pay all costs, who reaps the rewards? Who will be left?

Just a selection of pages that have passages that caught my attention and which I have read and reread to feel the tension and craft molded into this text. And a butterfly investigating our #milkweed as I read. #BookSky #astronomy 🧪 #history
Page xiii in "The Edge of Space-Time" by Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein with my fingers frame a paragraph:
"When it's at it's best, physics is a kind of poetry, a story about the cosmos that is made from metaphors--and a producer of metaphors in its own right. I believe that seeing the universe through the perspective offered by physics strengthens our ability to understand what work metaphors are doing on us and how to wield them. It is in this sense that physics works on us like poetry: a way of understanding the world that provides insights not available to us elsewhere." A superbly crafted paragraph that carries the tension and illustrates the concepts, and their uses, that allow her to dissect the history or race in science and its impacts on our (successful and unsuccessful) explanations of the world. Page 6 of "The Edge of Space-Time" by Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, my fingers pointing to the footnote:
"The overlap between al-Din and Descartes teaches us that people across wide geographic distances can develop similar curiosities and draw similar conclusions. This fact should challenge the racially essentialist notion that mechanism--and associated ideas about time--originated only from European perspectives on the physical universe."Page 7 of "The Edge of Space-Time" by Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, my fingers framing the sentence "This is what happens when you move through the world imagining that the abiding metaphors that govern your intellectual origins are synonymous with reality, when, as Trethewey says, 'received knowledge becomes synonymous with truth."There is a monarch butterfly investigating my horizontal milkweed.
