1/2 I may be wrong, but I think this is the first time this has been put plainly by a cabinet minister I’ve had conversations with non Labour people at conference, from right to hard right, & they’ve identified the indefinite leave policy as targeting non-Europeans for deportations i.e not white

Starmer is playing right into Reform’s hands—instead of insisting on a progressive (re-)framing of politics and society. Starmer seems to think that by pivoting to the right, he can stem the rise of Reform, but I suspect this will only deepen their support by reinforcing their preferred framing.

I have a feeling the digital ID stuff will burn Labour badly. Logic: 1. A lot of people hate the idea. 2. A lot of people who don't hate the idea "in theory" will hate the specific way that Labour have chosen to frame it all about immigration. That doesn't leave much potential for happy people.

Starmer's like a desperate gambler in Vegas signing over the deeds to his house for one final stack of chips. His approach will usher in Reform, and end Labour. Subjecting us to a destructive Reform government when a different path is available is an UNFORGIVABLE sin. Voters will never come back.

The Online Safety Act proved beyond a shadow of doubt that the government do not even have sufficient technical capacity to understand the full ramifications of our modern world. So the idea that they can successfully lead a project to introduce a robust, safe homespun digital ID is for the birds.

I was broadly in favour of national ID until recently. But I realise now that, rather than buying in battle tested technology from countries that have successfully adopted them (like Estonia), it seems much more likely we will bafflingly hand-roll a jolly British version. At which point... 🤦 🤦‍♀️ 🤦‍♂️
