My mum got a weekly 5 minute call from the payphone in the corridor as proof of my continuing existence. If she was lucky. When we had a house we had an incoming calls only phone. It was rarely on the hook. I'd have had my mother sectioned if she'd tried this. Insane behaviour.

If this was my mother I'd have just got another phone and sent the one my mother was stalking me on away with friends when they went home etc. And just never call her.

Incidentally, 2 days before we'd driven onto the US base at Alconbury to pick up an old VW beetle. We just drove in, after a quick check. The next week, no one was getting in! A line of armed soldiers across the gate.

Got sent home at tea time for some food and so they could tend to her. And then I saw the news. And then mum rang to say the hospital had called to say she died shortly after we left. It was a lot to process in one day!

But i was utterly insulated from what was going on outside. No smart phones, imagine! At one point I went to feed the parking machine and caught a glimpse of a plane hitting a building on a TV in a waiting area, but no context.

Spent the day sat around her bed and you just don't know what to say. She's sleeping. You eventually start chatting just as normal. And then she'd make a noise or twitch, and we'd all go quiet.

11 September 2001 for me started with a phone call that Granny had had a heart attack and was unlikely to come round from it. So me, my parents and aunt and uncle trooped to the hospital (old PDH).

I did a walk today that was supposed to be 3.6 miles long. Because I am a blundering idiot who can neither read a map nor follow simple instructions, I managed to turn that into a 7.8 mile hike. My feet hurt.

It's obvious she knows them. No women I know would sit calmly in a train carriage with a bunch of coked up masked men throwing Nazi salutes. Let alone take a selfie with them! Their intentions and beliefs are clear. Unless you agree with them, you'd vacate that carriage sharpish.

Idly scrolling BBC News while I wait at the vets. An utterly unremarkable story about parking tickets made perfect by the fact that Mr Cheeseman lives in Stilton.

My parents are boomer lifelong Tory voters, afraid of anyone with more than a good suntan. They are core Farage targets. They also have the RNLI as the sole beneficiary of their will, if i die before them. This just won't land well with anyone outside the frothing reform diehards.

Especially if they are doing it while wearing a fucking balaclava!

Anyway, it was a lovely walk, and it reminded me how peaceful and meditative solo walking is. I really enjoy my walking group, but sometimes walking alone is what you need. Helped me put some thoughts in order today.

Gave up live tweeting my walk when I realised I started the thread with Fotheringham when it quite obviously should have been FotheringHAY. Anyone who can think, type and walk clearly has a level.of competence that is beyond me.

I was sorely tempted, but resisted!
