Kill.Switch was the game that basically invented the third person cover shooter as we know it, inspiring the likes of Uncharted and Gears of War, defining the genre even today. It's also old enough to have gotten a weird 3D GBA port, which is what we're looking at today! youtu.be/gwRXgsEr200

Girl-things

A mechanical weapon girl, with exposed vents, wings and a still-glowing arm cannon stands, holding a much shorter, doll-like android girl who clings to her side. Behind them, the sky is hazy and orange, filled with smoke.

Alongside expressing my own appreciation for PSIV's comic book panels, I'll give the Retranslation + Relocalization romhack a fresh signal boost and recommendation. It turns an already solid localization into an even better one with lots of cut dialogue restored. www.romhacking.net/hacks/4171/

A screencap of the spacy PSIV titlescreen with Generation:4 added.

Restore every mistranslated connection to the other PS games
Incorporate The Cutting Room Floor’s retranslation notes to best express Japanese creators’ meaning & intent in all dialog, esp. story dialog
A more colloquial, readable, and emotional script (from NPCs to main story)
Add and Correct PS lore gathered from PS team interviews and official SEGA resources
Add depth to character personalities and relationships
Explain the few plot holes and character choices that had been given no in-game reasoning (see project site for details – spoilers)
AP-Style edited (grammar, capitalization, spelling/wording)
Restore censored content (A couple monsters re-added)
Item descriptions for late-game gear that had none
Minor endgame character / item rebalancing
More accurate translation of proper nouns/items/monsters/etc.
Made some vague PS-series lore connections more obvious
Translated “comedic” character’s mis- and untranslated jokes
Include lory1990 bugfixes

I would argue that Seal Away is a perfect example of a thematic card that is future-proofed enough to be re-usable in various settings, with art and flavour text adjustments that would effectively reposition what the card evokes. We don't need functional reprints with names like "haha villain trap"

Rob banks to increase gas for the next round, use dynamite to blow up chasing cop cars, milk the level for points before leaving for the next town. Great stuff. Love the cover too

YES, INDEED The Darksign brands the Undead. And in this land, the Undead are corralled and led to the north, where they are locked away, to await the end of the world... #crt #gaming #darksouls

In the land of Lordan, the Cursed Undead, bearers of The Darksign, are rounded up and imprisoned in the desolate north, where a terrible demon serves as both their warden and torturer.

There is a prophecy that a "Chosen" Undead will escape the Northern Asylum and make pilgrimage to the Land of the Gods..

..but most of those imprisoned in the "asylum" lose their minds and become hollow vessels, animated only by vestigial, primal instinct.

Some, however, rise to the challenge, like the heroes of old-- or the last roar of a flickering flame.

“This game has graphics and animation that makes Wolf/Spear (Wolfenstein 3D) look like Pong…” It's always neat coming across stuff like this in old archives: a BBS post from January 1993 of someone reporting on getting early first-hand experience of DOOM at CES and losing their shizz over it.

>Giddy giddy giddy giddy giddy.....

>I saw it, I "played" it, I did it!!

>ID's own Jay Wilbur and I had a few rendezvous' at CES and I'm
>thrilled to say that I had my first hands-on with Doom! and it was
>thrilling! For those of you who enjoyed Wolf/Spear (who didn't!?) and
>those who like a solid action game with great graphics, Doom WILL BLOW
>YOU AWAY, I PROMISE!! This game has graphics and animation the likes
>of which makes Wolf/Spear look like Pong... Sorry, I'm falling over
>myself, but it's that good, and I only saw just a bit.

In (mostly) forgotten handhelds that once sounded like they'd be the hot new thing: the Tapwave Zodiac. (2003) You'll see excitement flare up for a bit in tech and game mags in 2002-2003 over this quite beefy little handheld (200mhz ARM9 and 32/128MB RAM).

An ad for the zodiac, a squashy looking contoured oval handheld with silver and grey styling and an wide-screen display. From conception to reality, the tagline says, with a motif of sperm fertilising an egg. The zodiac is the egg and little earbud headphones with long thin cables are wiggling toward it from all directions.

Prepare to meet thy DOOM! In a very synthwave-ey way - and armed for Quake in its original medieval fantasy form! John Romero and John Carmack were seen by Electronic Games magazine as the hottest talents in the industry as '94 rolled into '95 and the id Software juggernaut kept on going.

The first double page spread of a feature on the meteoric rise of id Software following the release of DOOM I and especially DOOM II. The two Js are posed bathed in violet light and armed with a sword and axe.
