I know he's a racist, but I am just extremely confused as to what racist trope he's trying to invoke here?

Apparently you can avoid that by ordering one with extra pages (which costs the same as the regular size)

Yet again extremely glad I had to renew my passport in fall 2024 and I can bypass this entire administration.

I feel dumb even just having to say this but the reason passports are mailed out in plain regular envelopes is that so that people do not attempt to steal easily recognizable passports in the mail. bsky.app/profile/carn...

yeah - there's a special class of doctors (and appointments) for genuine emergencies (I had ankle surgery three weeks after I injured myself), but you sometimes need to know the magic words to bypass the normal scheduling.

...I threw a bit of a fit and was like, "I don't understand why I have to delay care for three more months because of a situation I did not create" and then they magically found me an appointment on the same day as my original (still a month and a half out!).

I have a routine appointment today that I scheduled A YEAR AGO. In august, I got a notification that my specific doctor was leaving the practice, and instead of just assigning me a new doctor, I had to call to 'reschedule' at which point they offered me an appointment in DECEMBER...

Also it’s The Athletic, a sports-news organization with a very specific focus. It’s like when the Philly Inquirer headline about some national event is functionally “Philly local has tangential tie to major national event”.

This has been in the back of my head since yesterday. Not only the “basketball game must mean NBA”, but that they couldn’t even fathom that Smith would attend a women’s game.

I say this as a lawyer, never put a lawyer in charge of the enterprise.

Yeah - at my job, some work is routinized based on quarterly reporting cycles, but most of my work (in-house corporate lawyer) is reacting to ad hoc stuff that happens day-to-day.

An actual robot servant would have been useful earlier this summer when I broke my ankle and was non-weight bearing for five weeks. Instead, a helpful human neighbor came over every day and made sure I got my mail.

Also also, to the extent I have more boring stuff on to do lists, they are things like reminders to take medication and feed my cat. There’s nothing to optimize because the reminder is the whole thing, unless AI is going to get the cat food out of a drawer and plate it for my cat.

Also, to the extent that people create routines for themselves (I had one when I was unemployed), we often take pleasure in the routine itself. Not sure why I would need AI to ‘optimize’ going to my local coffee shop to shoot the shit with some other regulars like I do every Sunday.

I'm formulating a theory that they think by making it a government expense, it's an 'official government act' that is immune under Trump v US, whereas if it was campaign funds, that would be campaign activity, not government activity. (to be clear, this is all very stupid)

The problem is that Israel wants to be BOTH a religious autocracy AND still get to claim the mantle of democracy.

It's rare to look at a video and thing "literally everyone is doing the wrong thing". The double-parked car, the fedex truck parked in the turning blind spot, the box truck driver trying to turn on narrow, local streets, the suv behind him who decided he needed to tailgate through the light.

I am not a car girl, but my dad is an absolute car guy, and I have learned certain things by osmosis. 🤣

It wasn’t exactly the same, but my dad had a 1983 mustang convertible. It’s biggest claim to fame was that a small indie movie studio rented it for a movie starring an up and coming pop star. www.imcdb.org/v071461.html

This. Any money that comes into the US government goes to the treasury and controlled by Congress. The president can’t siphon off some bucket of taxes for his own personal use simply because he exercised his (questionable) authority to impose tariffs.

One of my earliest protest experiences was renting buses from suny Buffalo to go to Albany (together with students from all over NY) to protest pataki’s slashing of the suny budgets.

This gets combined with the fact that all of the pets adopted during COVID never learned how to function for a few hours alone and you end up with a codependent mess where you have people insisting that every dog is an ESA that absolutely must be allowed in various food service establishments.

It was a kosher non-meat reception, but it was enough that the Rabbi went on an extended soliloquy from the book of Daniel 🤣

The thing is I don’t even think Dan’s name is intentional - he has two siblings whose names don’t do that trick. It was just the humor of Danielle accidentally marrying into a little word puzzle.
020
Sam @very-simple.com · 28/09/2026
My friend Danielle married a Daniel, and even better is that both of their middle initials are “A” and Dan’s last name begins with an N, and my friend was like NO FUCKING WAY AM I TAKING HIS NAME BECAUSE HAVING BOTH OF OUR NAMES *AND* OUR INITIALS BE ‘DAN’ IS A BRIDGE TOO FAR.

How does this even make sense in the current context of high fuel prices being the actual problem right now? Buy a new car that gets even LESS miles per gallon?

This is why Mamdani’s actual greatest achievement to date is fostering a really good relationship with Kathy Hochul, despite their political differences. I lived here through the Cuomo-DeBlasio animosity years and it is a major differential in being able to get other shit done.

Sam @very-simple.com · 28/09/2026
Mamdani is not immune to this issue, he gets tagged hundreds of times a day on, like, subway problems. (Subway is run by the state, not the city)

The wildest thing (to me) about these tunnel boring machines is that they're often single-use. They're too big and heavy to remove after they're done digging. www.sciencing.com/1875437/how-...

Here's How Tunnel Boring Machines Work (And Why They're Sometimes Buried Underground) - Sciencing
Tunnel boring machines support the leading edge of the tunnel as it's being dug and parts of it are left in place afterwards due to their size.

I have multifocal contacts, and find that they're good, but not as good as my progressive glasses. I mostly only wear them when I'm being active (gym, hiking, travel) and not spending a lot of time reading.

Oh, don't disagree. I just found the "HOW DARE YOU MAKE US TRAVEL TO BROOKLYN" to be very funny. (I am not quite at traveling to brooklyn levels of recovery yet because I'm still avoiding the subway, but surely not everyone is recovering from broken ankles)

Sam @very-simple.com · 28/09/2026
it's also somewhat reductive to be like "you people who don't listen to country are in a bubble" rather than recognizing that everyone is self-curating their preferred experiences at this point, because that is how music/TV/etc. are delivered these days.

I have tried to keep my HR fandom somewhat low key on here, but one of my best friends is OBSESSED and I am accompanying her to BOTH Rachel Reid's thing at Town Hall tomorrow AND the HR parody off-broadway show next week.

I keep forgetting that we even have state elections this year, because I have gotten literally no campaign materials from any campaign. It would not have shocked me to learn that James was running unopposed.

I get travel anxiety because I often go to off the beaten track places, but then I’ll get to, like, Mongolia and discover the massive in size and scope superstore equivalent of a wal mart directly next to my hotel in ulan Bataar.

Also do universities just not have common core/gen ed requirements anymore? I had to take 101 level world civ, math, science, and economics classes in order to graduate?

I like it out of the jar, but “a lot of horseradish” improves most fish related things, not just the jewish coded ones. (my tuna fish recipe is basically 50/50 tuna/horseradish, and it is fantastic)

Oh, and then there was the (woman!) partner at another firm who saw I was a womens’ studies major as an undergrad and decided to “brag” to me about how she “let” one of her associates take maternity leave, like it was the height of generosity rather than an explicit benefit the firm provided.

At one callback (2nd round) interview at a law firm, I got lectured by the head of the XYZ department about how if I really wanted to practice XYZ type of law I should go work for the federal government. Seemed like a weird thing to say to someone you actively invited back for more interviews?

Unless the song is being played on one of the multitude of podcasts I listen to as my general background audio, I am not going to know it unless and until I end up in, like, a Gap. And that’s true for all popular music made after about 2002, not just country.
