Cool @ecprtheloop.bsky.social piece by Flora Baumgartner on the car as part of the "culture wars". This does have a much longer precedent, however. One of the first right-wing populist parties in Europe was the Autopartei in Switzerland, founded in 1984

My love, my car: inside right-wing transport policy
Opposition to sustainable transport projects is growing, because of distributive and identity grievances familiar from broader climate policy. Flora Baumgartner looks at how transport policies are con...

"Whereas polarization suggests a symmetric process of divergence between opposing camps in an opinion space, radicalization describes a directional process of identitydriven escalation that undermines pluralism and democratic rules, often reshaping the broader political field in its wake." ⤵️

I'm working on a project on cross-national young gender gap that shows dif patterns. The below w ESS & CSES data show 1. Dif in ideology (id=standardized by country) btwn young men & women, where x is year & y is standard deviations 2. Young men & women ideology relative to other age-gender groups
This shows the difference in young men's and young women's (<30) ideology, standardized by country, over the last two decades. The trend lines include confidence intervals. A point above the dotted line indicates that young men are to the right of young women. This shows the average ideology of age-gender groups between 2002 and 2023. Ideology is standardized within country. Above the dotted line means the group is that many standard deviations more right than their country mean, while below the line means the group is that many standard deviations left of their country mean.

We should really be concerned about academic freedom in Finland. Recently, Health Minister Wille Rydman intervened in social work research funding by personally reviewing research proposals and rejecting those he deemed ”insufficiently justified given the current fiscal situation”.

🎉 New publication 😍 The 4th wave of the #farright is marked by #mainstreaming & #normalisation - but how can we distinguish between them? In our new article, @gefjonoff.bsky.social and I map the existing literature, introduce a conceptual framework & outline research avenues. doi.org/10.1017/S147...

For the FES, I wrote a short brief about how mainstream party strategies have fueled far-right success. They move toward more anti-immigration positions to win voters back. This does not work, but shifts public opinion to the right. Parties then react to shifts in public opinion. A vicious cycle.

When the United States gets through this period of madness, it will need to draft a new constitution. What we are witnessing is not only the erratic behavior of one man, or even a small group of fanatics, but a failure of political institutions. [1/3]

Radical right parties in Europe have not moderated. Their positions and rhetoric have entered the mainstream. They have become normalized and legitimized. Unless we understand this, we have little chance of countering their success.

Cas Mudde spells out what has become largely the consensus among researchers: moving right on immigration will not weaken the far right nor strengthen social democracy. If your reaction is "but in Denmark" please at least familiarize yourself with Danish politics www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The ‘Danish model’ is the darling of centre-left parties like Labour. The problem is, it doesn’t even work in Denmark | Cas Mudde
This week’s local elections are the latest reminder that when social democrats move rightwards, they’re making a mistake, says academic and author Cas Mudde

The far right will be the dominant force on the right in Europe within the next 5-10 years. Most focus is still on how to prevent this but imho too many mistakes have been made that have created path dependencies. We need to focus more on what it means for our democracies when we reach this stage.

To expand on why this is a ridiculous claim: the Netherlands uses all paper ballots marked with a red pencil. Voting and counting are decentralized and conducted by volunteers; anyone who wants to can come watch. Among the most trustworthy elections in the world. www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/...

🚨 Evergreen Post 🚨 Like almost every other West European election in this century, the Dutch election is not about “populism” but about nativism, i.e. xenophobic nationalism.

Finland, a country with a 10% unemployment rate, has now decided that being unemployed shows that you aren't "successfully integrated" and therefore don't deserve citizenship.
